Does anyone know if tires like the ones in this pic are made/used by any government that would fit the stock [1986] Toyota mini truck rims? I also have some 16'' rims that are a little wider.

Those tires are 9R16 Michelin XCL and I know that they are fairly easy to find as Canadian surplus.

Those are crappy tires, unless you are planning on running across the African country side. Steel sides... Practically unbreakable, but also very stiff and very heavy. The rubber is really hard and wont hold up on ether wet or dry surface.

Interesting, I know I need new tires soon, and I want something that will give very good traction on mostly dirt, don't care about road driving as its not my DD. Also looking for something quite cheap :)

Depending on what size you need, Mickey Thompson MTX are reasonably priced. I like the 32x11.50R15s that are on my 4Runner. I have about 35K on them and there is still about 50% tread left on them. They are quieter that the mud terrain tires, but more aggressive than the all terrain tires. They work well in the dirt and most mud.

Also, if you really need to keep the cost down, check on the store brand of tires when you are shopping around. You can often find a tire with the tread design that you want at a lower cost than the name brands. I put Power Cat Radials on my FJ40 that were almost identical to the BFG mud terrain and saved $40 a tire.

The thing is, I'm looking to SPEND $40 a tire or less :D

Then you need to be looking for used tires. Try to find someone that has the size you need and is changing to a larger tire. Good luck.

The Airport Rescue Fire trucks have those in a 20r24 size. Huge and incredibly they are radials. Not bad at all but they are very heavy. What size are you looking at?

Do a search...

I've heard allot said about the traction those tires have off-road. The comments aren't good but one thing someone should always consider is if you have traction diffs (locker, ltd) that will make up a lot for what tires dont give you.

If I had the diffs and had to or wanted a lesser tire I'd go for it, you live you learn and the best way to find about something is first hand.

(I REALLY think the first mod someone should do is diffs, been there done that)
