And that's the great thing of 100s of tire sizes. We can all choose what best suits us

Cheers with a shot of makers over here as well

Exactly! Just wish we had more choices on wheels too. :steer:

I think 255/85R16's are the best overall size tire for pretty much everything EXCLUDING rock crawling and hardcore mud. Lighter tire, great contact patch when aired down, much more economical for the truck, great in snow and sand. I plan on getting Toyo M-55's when the Michelin's finally wear out next year.
Be careful when you generalize as to "lighter". The Toyo 255 is heavier than both a BFG A/T or M/T in 285/75/16. Yes, it's lighter than the Toyo 285, but Toyo's are heavy tires. As to contact patch, keep in mind that "most" 255's are E load rated, and you have to air them down a bunch to get that contact patch. I had a flat in my driveway, and you had to look twice to even tell with the BFG M/T's on my 80. Still, I liked 'em.

:meh:

Well since I had the new 255/85/16. I mounted it on an extra wheel yesterday.

Does not look that bad at all. But as suspected, it is a bit skinny on the 100, mounted it in the back to eval. Should have snapped a pic. Will do today.

I was leaing to 315s but that is just going to open the door for more hardcore wheeling, which I have done but wanting to take it easy on this rig initially..

So today, at this moment, going with 285s...

Yeah, I was definitely generalizing on the 255 in a generic sense irregardless of brand. The Toyo M-55's are definitely a heavy tire (lots of thick sidewall and E load rating).

Yeah, you do have to air them down quite a bit. Which unfortunately means more time both airing down and filling up. However, I think for my use, it is worth it (eventually 70% gravel / dirt roads, 25% pavement, and 5% mud).

Or you can just leave them at about 40-45psi. perfect on-off road combo... for me, at least.
 That's a lot for off-road (and on-road in my opinion). I ran my 255's on my 80 at 16-18 PSI on the dirt, 32-35 around town.

220.00 per tire at discount for 285s. Not mounted. Online had them for 200 even but the you gotta pony up for shipping. Incase anyone is curious.. Btw, 4wheelparts is supposed to carry Maxxis now but they seemed very uninterested in my business.

Update

Update...

Well, I went with the 285s and after a few months and about 4k miles, I am going back to the 255s..

After the skid plates were mounted, I measured the clearance with the 285s was about 12" where the front and mid plates join.

I then put my spare 255 on the driver's front, and the clearance went up to 13".

So a 255/85/16 not only will give me an additional 1" of clearance but should also give better mileage.. With Gas going up and my wheeling being more Over-landing these days vs. rock crawiling. I am going to pull the trigger today on some new 255s.

Selling my 285s to a buddy here this afternoon, so all in all, a good swap.

Weighted the 285s look as if they are coming in at about 31.75 in height and the 255s were measuring closer to 32.5 weighted.

Seems interesting that this is about .75 difference in tire height but yielding 1" in lift.

I like the width of the 285s for sure but the clearance on a wider wheel is not so good. I ran 285s on a 8" rim for a short time with my FJC and compared to my 7.5" rims with 285s, the 8 " rim combo seemed like after airing down, I was touching down a ton more..

Subjective for sure, but after measuring the 1" clearance difference last night, I am going to give the 255s another shot.

Too bad someone does mot make a true 34" for a 16" rim, that would be ideal.

:hhmm: I'd double measure. Even with .75" of measured difference in height, you should only realize half of that in ground clearance (or maybe a little more than half due to contact patch). Differences in tread depth and wear, maybe?

285/75/17 seems like the ideal tire size for me. but hard to justify a wheel swap for "just a little bit more"...

Good luck!

oh, and I re-read this thread. I need to clarify my "goofy looking" comments. I was remembering the 235/85/16's that (I thought) were too skinny and looked goofy, not the 255's.

Yep gained closer to between .5 and .75 inch clearance. But the thing that is important also is the sidewall is a bit stiffer so the tire appears to hold it shape a bit better in when deflated.

Sold my 285s today, 255s installed.

Really, they look fantastic. I am glad I took the chance on this mod.

It is such a relief sometimes when you go for it on a mod and it works out.

With gas going up, looking forward to a bit better mileage as well.

Will snap a few pics.

I'd go with 255s. I don't mind looking goofy to somebody else. Better mileage, cheaper, lighter, still capable, it's all good IMO. But yes, it might be better to run a 7" rim.

they dont look goofy, they look great. they also seem to be cheaper than 285s.

Are there any non-mt tires in this size? I haven't been able to find any.

Cooper Discoverer S/T, I have these on my troopie in 255/85R16. Nice ride, quieter than the Goodyear MTRs on my 100.

I've been told Cooper is discontinuing the ST in favor of the ST Maxx, which doesn't come in 255.

So, either buy now, or, if you are worried about finding a replacement down the road, consider something else.

These worked great on the kokopelli, seemed to have plenty of clearance.

As far as fuel economy, with the RTT, awning, 2 bikes and a weeks worth of food, beer clothes, etc.. I made it from Denver to Fruita on 3/4 of a tank. About the same as my 4runner v6 minus the RTT.
