who is running what?
we bought the longs 30 splines, and the extra lock out gear.
we have pretty much stock motors, the wife has a single case 4.7, I have dual cases.
we are both 5.29 gears in the axles. Locked front and rear.

we don't want to break stuff.
but I have to ask, who is running tires larger then the 36 x 12.5 x 15 inch swamper sx's?

how are things holding up and what tire size and type are you running.

we try hard to not bounce, but you don't know you are going to bounce untill you do. then if you are on the gas it is hard to let off right away.

thanks for your time.

how about the springs and turning.. that is what I am worried about.
glad to hear that we are currently safe...
just going to buy new tires for my truck and was thinking maybe 38s.. but if I am going to spend 1000.00 or more on tires I want to be sure before I order bigger tires.
I wish that I had a bud that had 38s and would let me try before I buy.
I love the sx's... but would be willing to try the iroks.

those longs will hold up with 39.5" tires.

the most IMPORTANT thing you can do is make damn certain your steering stops are adjusted properly.
over turning the knuckle will kill any birfield.

Yeh, that is just it. I have swampers that are maybe 10 years old, stored in a garage, bought them cheap. found that above 33 inch tires you have to have longs. broke an axle in like 50 feet of a trail and was not even on it. but these garage tires that are old... I lost like 50 percent of the lugs.. yeh,,,, no idea where, or what I was spinning on...... did alot of spinning the week end leading trails every day. but I am missing the whole lug... off of many spots on the tires.
so, after watching everyone else, my wife included, she is not missing lugs on her new 36 inch swampers. I think mine are old and dry rotted. there are no cracks in the sides that would give that indication.. but there are lugs missing and others that are ripped part way.
so if I am going to spend close to or above a 1000.00 for tires do I want to go to 38's or 40's? I think that 38's would fit and work.. I do rub my springs with the 36's...just a bit... and I don't want to break stuff..

I ran 35" xterrains on my 30 splines, with chromo hub gear, cryo'd 5.29 R&P, and dual cases. Never had a single problem whatsoever.

Anything can be broken, it all depends on where and how you wheel.

As has been said, make sure your steering stops are correct and it will help alot. The weak link may not be your birfs anymore, it might now be the ring and pinnion. Just somthing to think about.

I have been running 35s with 5.29s, open front and stock birfs on my 85 4runner for about 2 years and wheeled through Fordyce and Rubicon no problem. If you arent running a front locker, and not running massive tires (ie 35-36 or larger), and most importantly don't beat the front or hammer down with the steering at full turn, the stock birfs hold up fine. Is there a possibility they will break? Of course. Its cheaper for me to carry a spare set of stock birfs until I can afford 600+ for Longfields. They will be well worth it but I havn't had any problems with my stock birfs yet so until money is no object they are going to remain.

I have a friend who ran 37s, 5.29s with an open front for about 5 years and ran Fordyce about a dozen times, never broke a birf. Sometimes they go but they are pretty stout overall.

4.88s, front locker, 36 bias iroks and 30spline longs.. I beat the crap out of them all day long... never ever had a problem out of them. Seems like most of the people who have broke them installed them wrong or had something else cause breakage. Only a couple of people have popped them and they were too big to be on toy axles imho

VERY heavy 35x15.5 SX's, Locked F & R, 5.29s, stock birfs. Been beating on them all season with good luck so far. Course I'll probably blow one up on this weekends trip now. :bang:

Thanks guys and gal's my wife and I talked it over and are staying with the 36 sx's.
had a guy with the 48? irocks on our trail. It really didn't look like he had any fun. just drove over everything. mog axles. v8.. blah blah blah..
so we like a challenge and are going to stop making our trucks bigger.

thanks for all the in put and advice.
we have the longs and lock out gears. going to be dual cased with the 4.7s in the rear. sounds like we don't have much to worry about..

again, thank you.
