After I got it bolted on I discovered a crack on my cover....at the top where the bolt goes through the head into the cover. I painted it just for this purpose so I could see it better if I did.....but I will be honest.....the cover I have on my 84 looks like its a hair to short? Could I have the wrong cover ? 85 maybe? Or newer? Even with it bolted down it seems like there would be to much of a gap.

I will be giving LC engineering a call.:bang:

well after some talking and searching it is the right cover.

The head has been shaved so I will need to use an extra head gasket(just the very end).

The cover is warped....which explains why my gaskets on the passenger side keep getting deformed when I tighten on the passenger side only.....same spot every time. Also explains why the cover don't cover all of the cast like its suppose to. It lacks like 1/16 of an inch to covering the cast. Always take a straight edge and check the cover before re-install..

who told you you had the right cover??

you're head being shaved has nothing to do with the timing cover

however a 85 and up timing cover on a 84 and older block will have a gap about a .200 inch gap

If you shave the deck of the head that will make the deck shorter hence a bigger gap for the cover no? Well no matter this cover has a crack....so I am tossing it.... I will compare the 2 covers to be sure Thanks wristy for the call:beer:

 i have to know, who told you to do that?? let me guess the idiot that sold you the timing cover ??

well i do think a new cover will be in the build here. chris the blocks do have a different height here it is 1981 to 1984 deck height is11.280" 1985 to 95 deck height is 11.090 so i think you might just need the right timing chain cover. i think that someone tried to put a newer timing chain cover on that thing. if i am right the newer block is shorter and your bolt holes are not lining up then the pin that holds the gasket would not allow the cover to tighten to the block. depending on this tooth i could pull the cover i have and try to get it to you some how save a few dollars it is good but might have some indianhead on it i can not remember if i used it on that one.

um NO, it doesnt work like that

the 80-84 22R blocks had a deck height (oil pan surface to headgasket surface) of 11.280 inches
the 85 to 94 22R blocks (commonly called the 'laser' blocks) had a deck height of 11.080 inches

Thank you.....wristy is checking his stock pile for a new ....or correct cover whichever. I suppose I will not know for sure until I get the correct one. It would not suprise me if it is wrong. I am going to put a straight edge to it tomorrow for s***s and giggles.

chris they are right if the head was milled it would not make a difference on the timing cover. but if the block was milled then your cover would be to big . that kid went to a scrap yard and pulled the first cover he seen and used it. then he cracked it when he torqued the bolt going through the head.

guys if you need anything (tech wise on 22R's or first gen pickups) i am on MarlinCrawler and Arkansas TTORA under the same name, i came over here initially today to find out if anyone was coming to the TTORA National Takeover event in HotSprings ??

chris i probably would have been able to figure all this out on the phone but with this fxxxing tooth a yelping pup screaming kids and nagging wife i could not think. but was not long before i found the info in my lcengeneering catalog and then figured out what was happening.

It just looks sooo damn close to being a fit. That is what gave me the idea it may be warped.

i know man and it might be like i said if it was bolted up got hot cold hot cold ....... it probably is warped too but they still put the wrong one on. that is why you have been going through this s***. so hopefully either wristy has one or i can get mine to you. either way i know what it is like being on a tight budget.

looks like a s*** load of fun but my rig is down and i have an 88 chrysler labaron convertable i have to get out of my garage so i can get my truck in there and that thing is a pain in the ass. so i will not be able to make it. you could come help me with that and then you would appriciate how nice it is to wrench on a toyota.
