Unimogs are slightly stronger than volvos, the Unimog is heavier IIRC, and was designed to haul/tow more. I don't forsee a problem with 40's on the Volvos though, but those under a Cruiser might create some sever rubbing problems and probably be a little too top heavy with the lift required to fit the 40's. I may be wrong as the facts I have to back all this are just faint memories of past readings. I say try it, if the 6" springs are too tall, it wouldn't require much to take them out and put in smaller ones. Good luck, I say talk (nicely) with TiredIron about his build, get ALL the little details you need, and go for it. Then you would be on a good start, and then the 7" vs. 11" lift would be the only battle left. Good luck I say, and I can't wait to see 11"s with 40's, whether it be a poser shot or on a useable rig.

The portal should handle 40's no problem. If the stock axles can handle 40's then the portals will easily. Heck they probably handle 44's.
I wouldn't say that. When I got my Volvo portals I had the view that they should run no more than a 37-38 tire. I was not planning on going portals for strength, but rather the ability to run a tire that size while having greater clearance and keeping a lower COG. Heck, to me the ideal setup with volvos would be 36" tires.
