My battery light has been coming on intermittently at idle, but I've always cleared it by tapping the gas. Today though the light finally made up its mind and stayed on at idle, off at 2k rpm, on at idle, etc. I put a meter on it and got 13.8 V at 2k rpm and 12.8 V at idle (800-900 rpm). These number are reason enough to get a new alternator. What's got me wondering is at idle the voltage actually cycles up and down between 12.8 and 13.8 V. Could there be some regulator somewhere that's failing also? Or should I not worry about that because the regulator is built onto the alternator?

Related question: anybody got any good recommendations for higher amp alternators or deep cycle batteries?

Most cost effective is 150 amp sequoia alternator from same generation.

I run northstar group 31 AGM in OEM location. It's a tight for and you would need some other battery clamp and extend the body ground cable. Odyssey or Northstar would be a solid choice. Lithium would be much lighter but they are very spend. Not sure how good are they for starting battery. Haven't done any research yet.

$133 on Amazon for the sequoia alternator mentioned above. It comes with an amps/rpm test graph, the one I got hit 178 amps at 6k rpm and roughly 140 amps at my normal rpm range of 2000-2300.
