So I just noticed that my steering tie rod ends are leaking, one is completely dry. Can I buy just the boots or do I need new rod ends?

The 2 boots in the middle of the steering linkage (don't know what they're called) are also leaking..

Whaataya thinking?

lift your truck up, set it onto jack stands and grab your tires front and rear each side, and move it back and forth. You can also check wheel bearings and ball joints by grabing your tire on top and bottom. Make sure your steering wheel is unlocked. You can tell how bad your tie rods are. If they are leaking, I would suggest that you replace them, its not too expensive, may 30 bucks for a quality tie rod. Thats what we do at tiresplus and it is a pretty fail safe approach to checking. Any more questions feel free to ask. Oh and if you do decide to replace it remember your passenger side tie rod is reverse thread.

Also it wouldn't hurt to shove some grease in there, well grease all your zurks, if some are they dry. While you are at it you could check your drive lines too!

Bout to head to the bar and I just remembered something to add. You may need to have some one shake it for you so if there is something loose you can see it, since you will be on the other side of the tire, sounds funny but sometimes its hard to tell what is loose in the front end when you are shaking it. Also check your idler arm thats the "weak" point on the front end and make sure to keep that greased. Good luck Buddy.

Right on, I'm just gonna put some new rod ends and call it a day. Thanks for the reply bud.

Yeah no problem, hope all goes well... Have you gotten your alignment or you still waiting on tires? I would have to say it would suck if you did already get your alignment, make sure your front end is tight, and complete before you do that unless you buy a lifetime or three year alignment. Any ways Good luck!

Oh and let me know how it goes, and we still need pictures of your new wheels and tires.

Wheels & Tires should be at my door this Friday, alignment next Monday and it'll be time to finally get it dirty! I'll take some pics for sure and post em up.

I just picked up a couple new rod ends and some new boots for the inners. I need to grab the rod end puller tool :wrench: tomorrow.

Nice, its a fun process I love doing things to my truck, not really hard to do and its all a learning experience. Well I love working on other peoples cars too but nothing beats your own junk! Let me know how it goes, and tie rods aren't hard... Do you have an impact gun by chance, it makes your life easier if you do just because those tie rods can be rather rusty! Anyways good luck... I now have to go do my CV boots, maybe tomorrow. I got Beer to drink tonight!
