I am new to the forum as far a posting but I have gained a wealth of knowledge reading threads here, great site and thanks for all of the help.

I am looking at purchasing a FJ45 LWB and I have found the following vehicle for sale. I will just be using the vehicle as knock around vehicle and for hunting, however I do want to purchase a truck that is a decent vehichle that I could keep improving, however I don’t believe that I will be doing any frame off restoration. They describe the vehicle as a 1978 FJ45 Diesel, could someone give me some details on the vehicle history and the options that were available with that year, any Pros and Cons for the year model.
Any comments on the Diesel engine, Parts availability, power and torque as well as dependability would be appreciated.
It is also missing the Original bed, is this something that can be found and replaced and if so what should I expect to pay for a bed?
I plan on taking a trip to look at the vehicle and will take some detailed pictures to post in case I am missing something during the inspection. Is there anything that I should look for out of the ordinary?
They are asking $4,000.00 does this seem reasonable for this truck, I have posted some pictures below as well.
Thanks again for any suggestions or comments on this.

that's apreety sweet lookin truck. from the pics, it looks like a good deal. but, out of common sense i would say that the flat bed was "most-likely" used for work. so you should check and see if there was any bad wear anywhere in that area.
i know nothing about deisels though.

good luck.

I think that rigs been on Ebay a few times---if its the same one it came from south America and may have some rust issues. If it has a diesel engine than it should be an HJ45 or 47 depending on witch diesel engine it has. You may also want to have the frame checked to make sure it is straight.

As Bikerso mentioned, it's been on ebay a few times. IIRC, it's from Honduras. It's an HJ45 so it will have the H diesel which is not the most desirable diesel out there. They work fine but parts can be hard to find.

If you have ever been to Central or South America, you will have seen these trucks being beaten to death but...they keep on working and working hard. I'd be surprised if the frame wasn't flared out in the back where it's been overloaded.

If you are looking at a driving truck and and $4000 is in your ballpark, it's not a bad deal. But, if you want to restore it back to new, I think I would look elsewhere. Or offer the guy $2500 and have fun.

Guys Thanks for all of the responses. If the truck was in Central or South America would it be a LHD or RHD vehichle? Thanks again.

Hope you're under 6' tall cuz those pickup cabs are very tight!!

Stay away from that truck. I've seen it on ebay also and know it has issues. I just happen to meet the guy who was the high bidder one time. (I sold him one of my motorcycles). He went down to pick up the truck and the guy wouldn't sell it to him b/c he said he wasn't getting enough money for the truck? The buyer wasn't disappointed though b/c after looking it over carefully he said it wasn't worth it. If I were you I would look else where.
I still have the guys email that went an looked at it. Hes a good guy and a good mechanic. I can give you his email if you want to here it from him first hand.

Thanks everyone for the replys here, I believe that I will keep looking for another truck. Thanks again.
