Here's A pic of the Blue Truck..with a very early design of a Lally Bar ....used around here for mustering cattle on the many cattle stations in central Australia

nice ride mate! what I want to know is what happened to all the stock beds for the 45 series down under? Must have shipped them without or just put the tray backs on?

Welcome Crumbo and Blue.

Good to see a few Aussie versions on the site, especially from the Red Centre ! I have a cab chassis model also. I have seen a few original and straight ones in Darwin with tray tops and tubs. Would love to get a tub for mine but they are as rare as hens teeth.

A wealth of knowledge on this site, enjoy.:)

It was a pretty popular vehicle for the land owners "farmers" so most were sold as cab chassis versions. Flat top drop side trays were more versatile for their load needs. They still are a more popular choice on all the landcruiser utes from the 75's to the 78series, now all the way to the awesome new v8 diesel models now available. Style side tubs were dropeed in the late 90's as they never sold that well.
If you couldsqueeze one of those turbo intercooled 4.5 liter V8 diesel engines into a 45 series it would be heaven :D

Cheers

The country 'round here is Toyota Dreaming .....the National Parks and Wildlife used FJ's in the 70's with the factory arse end .....I'm sure there a load of them out bush ...on communities , just lying in the scrub...but as NTFJ45 says ,the land owners often modified to suit more practical applications...
I'm going to Wave Hill /Kalkeringi to do some work so I'll check out whats around....

Crumbo,

Have a great trip over West, thanks heaps for keeping an eye out on a tub for me ! I'll provide a healthy commision for a decent one sourced.

All the best for you and Blue on your journey:steer:

Cheers

Not actually going west ....About 500 kms from Darwin...But I'll be on the look out for bits just the same...

G'day Crumbo,

Respects to you Blue too :)

I should of worded that west comment better, I meant west of the Stuart Hwy or NW of the centre. Any way I appreciate the look out for any parts or wrecks.
That is not too far to consider a recovery expedition, you of course could have the pick of the parts. I really only want a tub but am always interested in any other parts if available.

If you are up in Darwin or need parts picked up or sourced send me a PM. I would be glad to assist a fellow cruiser nut.

Thanks
NT

Cheers NTFJ45,
I'll definately do some searching whilst out working ......when I get home I'll be re-doing the swivel hubs + king pins (nasty leaks happening) and putting new brake shoes all round.....I also have a valve problem so a head job is in order but if I pull the head off I'll probably do the pistons and rings and the bottom end as the parts I've been told are relatively cheap....and while I'm at it chuck in a new clutch.....looks like a rebuild.... might as well treat the old girl nice.
see you all when I'm back on the 'puter
P.S. Wouldn't mind putting a fairey over-drive in to give her more legs on the highway

G'day ...back from Kalkarinji....and nothing to be found...looks like simsmetal has been through which is happening a lot these days but I did find a few 5 speed boxes out and about which I'll pick up later for my mate here in alice.....Heading out to Haasts Bluff ...i know some of the out-stations there so I will be on the look out

Just got back from Haasts Bluff ...broke a spring seat on the way but when I arrived in the community low and behold a 45 was sitting in the middle of the flat...even better though was a left and right spring seat behind the seat. I'm going back out there this week to retrieve a long range tank which from first looks seems ok.
Also ordered my personalized number plates .....BUSTDRS....which I think suits the old busted arse ute to a t

Hi Crumbo,

Sounds like you had a bit of an adventure which is what owning a old Landcruiser is about;)

Good score on the long range tank and seat springs.

I have got my ute booked in for a Old Man Emu suspension uprgrade at ARB in Darwin next week. The poor old girl has got a bit of a lean on at the moment with spring sag. That is one bad thing about the Aussie 45s as all the weight is on the RH side.
Battery, transfer case, driver and fuel tank.

Cant wait to see the improvement.

Any how thanks again for the look out on a tub, It appears I may just get some alloy drop sides made up for now till I can find a tub. I can get the sides made here in Darwin for around a $900.

Good luck on your adventures with Blue :steer::beer:

G'day NTFJ45, i never clicked that all that weight was on that one side plus my secondary battery plus all the tools and s*** in the back.
Waiting for the radiator mob to repair a few leaks and I'll be out to look at a few more things ....found the local aboriginals told me of an out-station where a fan of old 45's lives, they say he has a few in his yard
Might find something out there or a least log its position

pics Haasts Bluff

have to work out this Old tjilpie saw the 45 and low and behold there's a bidding war...

Broken......had to drive 47 km's of corrugations with this

So sad when this is where you go to work

Hi ..its been a while ..just too busy and there aren't many internet connections out bush..
Just picked up a full transmission with fairey overdrive for $500 aud
now I've got a head problem (exhaust valves...I think) need to wet test it
Trying to get on to old mate here in Alice whos got a fully rebuilt 2F engine....just won't answer the bloody phone ....so I've sent him a text.....(I've got money you've got motor)....hopefully he will get back to me soon otherwise off comes the head....but I figure if I just pull the whole bloody thing out and swap gear box and donk in one go...as the existing donk needs front and rear seals...it too cold here atm though...wish this weather would warm up a bit :(
