Thinking about getting a dog

Get a pitbull rescued from Michael Vick. Sweet animals. Great around kids and other dogs.

Go lab/retriever mutt mix. It was my true first dog, the first one i got to claim, but i had to give it to my grandparents do to the stupid appartment restrictions.

Its now the most lovely dog alive. Shes is so cute! Her name is Sasha, and she had long hair (takes alot of time to groom) She is extremely social, as my grandparents own a feed store and she sees other people/dogs/cats/cows/horses/goats all day long.
She is the most protective dog Ive had the grace of owning. Especially of my grandmother and my baby cousin.
First instance is her defending my grandmother from a younger pits that locals fight. Gives them a bad rep. Customers brought it in, and it started peeing on everything. My grandmother politely asked them to take the dog outside and they (knowing no english) laughed. Grandma was pissed (and scared, youd have to know her). Sasha came around the corner with her teeth bared. The pit jumped at her and sasha had that thing on the ground before you could move! She was fiesty!

on another note, she really knows how to be gentle. my baby cousin (2yrs at the time) loves to play with her. And he refuses to hold her collar. She has longer hair, so he grabs that instead. And hell lead her around everywhere like that. He had the bright idea to wonder off into the abyss of our farm (500 acres). He is a sly little boy to say the least. We found him a mile away, curled up in a ball on sasha. He was asleep, even had his passy. Sasha was awake and alert, even had his head tucked under her neck.

Smart dog she is, she is also healthy. My grandfather has broke her hip twice. First time she fell out of the back of his truck at 50mph. second time she was running from cows and hid right inbetween the duals of his ton job. He pulled foward and crushed the same hip as before.
Now shes just peachy, and is a true hunter. She has learned to 'point' for us. Shes a year and four months. weighs 58lbs and is spoiled rotten. Its a shame i cant claim her as mine anymore :(

Don't listen to those Wedgewood democrats who say mixed-breeds are fine - they are just slumming it, and will be abandoning the little mulattos at the shelter as soon as the tax man leaves! Pure breeds are the only way to go! Those dogs have class - otherwise people wouldn't pay so much for them!

I expect that this was a joke (albeit not particularly good). If not, it is dumb.

Sorry Brett but I didn't read all of the posts above.

My experience is coming from three Goldens, a Yellow Lab, Catahoula, Flat Coat Retriever, Blue Tick, Basinji, Doberman, German Sheppard and a Rottweiler.

At this point for a child IMHO the Goldens are the best. They're (at least mine) very gentle and loving dogs. Never, not once did I find my Goldens being aggressive towards my children and yes they came from puppy mills or pet stores. They are a little easier to work with than a Lab because they tend to be more accommodating/gentle when it comes to people. The Flat Coat is pretty good with kids, but mine had a tendency to be a little crazy when it came time to be gentle.

Anywho, my three in order of preference with a child are:

1. Golden (negatives = shed a lot)
2. Lab (negatives = a little rough when pups)
3. Flat Coat (often skittish)

The others (IMHO) just aren't gentle enough with their actions in my book. I'll never own an aggressive dog of any breed. I would prefer a loyal dog that is gentle, energetic and family oriented. The latter being of the most importance.

As far as grazer goes ............ :meh:

Which commentary and opinion is because you are a starve-brained idiot who is out of touch with the norms of chat and humor in general. You probably get upset at billboards and drive the family crazy explaining why an ad campaign offends you.

Even if you were right, which you are not, you are an unwelcome nattering nabob of negativity.

One problem with goldens and labs is they stink. You can't pet'm without having to go wash up. Short haired dogs (boxers, dauchsunds etc..) are generally much better on the stink factor... FWIW. Sure you want a big dog running around the house.., they pant more, slobber... you can't have nothing.

This is a big concern for my wife. Well, and my daughter. The first thing my little girl said when I told her I was considering a dog was, "Dad, I have one thing to say to you: Dog Hair".
That was her concern... and to be honest, she spends 90% of her time on the floor crawling since she cant walk, so she has a perspective I don't have.

Amy is more concerned with stinky dog smell. How do you solve this? Are any breeds less smelly? I know that is a weird question, and it will not dictate this decision, but I really don't know the answer.

They don't smell bad if you wash them regularly.

Puggs shed 100% of the time.

They are the only dog that does.

being from texas you may be interested in Blue Lacy's. They are the state dog and they seem to be able to adapt to any envirnment. My uncle has two and they are the best dogs i have ever met. I am currently tring to get one myself

check them out at TLGDA or Blue Lacy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

vizsla's have very short hair and are said to be odorless because they clean themselves

I'm pretty fond of giant schnauzers and airedales. They don't shed, great family dog, very protective, and are great outdoor/hunting dogs.

Think about a Coon Hound with dark freckles and you will be close.
