I just used some spray high-tack to hold the gasket into the housing - I hate being anal but the dumb thing should fit the machined part of the housing . The issue here is if you went to any other material you risk changing the durometer of the rubber and not allow it to seat the base housing gasket . Seems to work fine , no hot coolant in the upper hose until the thermostat opens so I think so far all is good . Engine does seem to run better so far but it's been nearly 40* here , odd weather for our state in January . I use liberal amounts of sil-glyde on the gaskets to prevent them sticking and getting pulled out of alignment , sure makes it nice working on stuff years down the road too .

for the OEM gasket between head and T- housing, do you just use sil glyde and no other sealants?
No FIPG, etc...?

A little RTV on the cardboard gasket is a good idea because it helps make a good seal, and it is far easier to scrape off than a bare gasket.
Sil-glyde is great on hoses to reduce corrosion and prevent hose from sticking to fitting.

Lol - that is , if you have a valve that actually shuts the water off :^) .
Need to look into those and see if there is some way to uncrimp them and do a rebuild or make new ones .

I had a similar issue-took the valve apart(not difficult). Gaskets/seals were deteriorated but I couldn't find any replacements-cleaned up as best I could and put it back together--worked way better than before, but still leaks a little. If there were a parts source for these, it would be easy to rebuild------
