Yeah, that guy is a very good source of information on oil and how engines work with it. One of his latest videos was very informative. Things like less friction does not necessarily equal less wear and vice versa. Also the fundamental basics of the Stribeck curve and the fact that due to difference in metallurgy, one oil that is great for one engine might not be for a different one. Understanding those differences is key to picking the right one.

The fact that direct injection is one of the key factors for why oil chemistry has changed was very interesting and why piston ring tension, fuel type and operating temperature range is what really determine ideal viscosity. Makes total sense though once you get into it.

He also specifically mentions that these developments of low viscosity oils are for US CAFE requirements and are not recommended in overseas manuals by manufacturers because they simply do not have the same stringent requirements. In other words, if a different oil is mentioned in other manuals overseas, it is totally ok to use those recommended viscosity oils in the engine, operating and starting temps taken into consideration.
