To My Fellow Hoosier Cruisers:

Thank you for everything you all did today. A better group of guys I've never met.

Special Thanks to Jimmy, Carl, Bill, and everyone else that helped out on my rig today. My family and I thank you sincerely.

See you guys next week for the front axle work.

Jeff

Marty,

Even though I didn't actually work on your rig, on behalf of the Hoosier Cruisers, your welcome.
Thanks for giving us the opportunity to share a little Cruiserhead hospitality with you.
Nice to meet you & glad you joined our band of merry misfits.

Jeff, what is your work schedule for this weekend? I can't find your email address, must be in my gun case or something...

Brian,

My e-mail is jtw2308@gmail.com.

My work schedule this weekend is as follows:
Sat- 6:00am-3:00pm (I am going to get out of work early around 10am)
Sun- 8:00am-5:00pm

If it works for you to come up Sat, Carl said we could use his shop and Jimmy offered to come and help. Carl is ordering a whole front axle kit to do the birfs and all seals and the inner and outer bearings.

Let me know. Thanks.

Jeff

Saturday will work fine. I'm having a hell of a time trying to get the Toyota hub socket, the Toyota dealer here does not sell special service tools, and Harbor Freight and Sears do not have any deep well 2-1/8" sockets, and I'd prefer to not have to use my channel locks. I picked up the grease and all other associated tools and things, just need that socket. I am doing the front left anyways, but would you like me to service the right side as well? May as well, since I'm going to have everything there.

Brian

Brian,

I believe Carl or Jimmy are getting the full axle kit stuff (wheel bearings, birf grease, seals, etc.). I will check with Butler Toyota about the wheel tool you are referring to. I hear that O'Brien and Beck are also friendly. Jimmy is planning on helping on Saturday as well.

P.S. You've got a place to stay if you need it Saturday night.

Jeff

id find it hard to believe carl or jimmy dont have the 54mm

Do the regular 2-1/8" sockets work? I seem to remember trying the 2" socket and it not working with my drum brake sized nuts, thought I needed a deep well socket. Are the spindles different lengths, since it lets the regular socket work?

spindle length doesnt matter as much as the axle length passing beyond the spindle. I would guess the distance between the inner nut and the end of the axle is no more than 2 inches.

Brian,
Carl's got the socket. Sometimes the Sears sockets are hit or miss. The outside diameter is just a CH too big and it will not fit into the spindle housing.

But there's also a hammer and screwdriver that works also.

Pretty hard to set proper preload with a hammer.

Pretty hard to set proper preload with a hammer.

Its what most mechanics use. Every toyota ive had, the first time I open the hub I see the gouges from a screwdriver and hammer.

Besides....who cares about preload?

My Sears one works great on the 80. No need for deep well.
