I found a detailed test drive report from Japan covering the newly re-released Land Cruiser 70.

What I found interesting is how the article explains the balance between keeping the original 70 Series character while refining it for modern usage. It’s written by a former Toyota planner with extensive driving experience, so the perspective feels quite grounded.

For those curious about how Toyota is positioning the LC70 today, here’s the article:

The new ones still drive the same as the first coil front end models when they were new, some 25 years ago now. Few more interior comforts these days but more or less still essentially just a workhorse as it should be.

Lost personally with the introduction of the 4cyl and auto in most people here's opinion. I still find it hilarious how reviews always state that the 4cyl is so much quicker than the 1VD V8 but leave out the difference in gear ratios. V8 manual 3.9, 4cyl auto 4.3, manual 4.1.

I like that they are going back to a 4 cylinder engine, (but would have kept an I6 option, though something a little more up to date than the 1HZ). If you want something to be basic and utilitarian a 4 cylinder makes sense; on paper at least, you get better efficiency and more torque out of the same capacity of I4 than I6 or V8. Sure the I6 is smooth and sounds great, but that's going beyond the basics IMO.

But 100% with you on the auto, sad to see even the utilitarian 70 lost to those who enjoy driving. I dare say these newer autos are not as bad as the old slushboxes that needed patience to stir into action, but still, horrible. At least they are not an EV.
