I finally bought my locked 80 I've been trying to find for what seems like forever...

I bought the truck out of state. I currently reside here in Chicago but I've got a house in Colorado that I'm moving back into in 8 weeks when my current employment contract ends. I currently have a NJ temp tag on the vehicle (that's where I bought it), and I don't want to register it in Illinois considering I'm going to be moving in 8 weeks anyway. I will likely drive it back to Colorado over Easter, but I need to have a good temp tag in the meantime.

The NJ temp tag I've got now expires at the end of this week. This is the first temp tag I've ever had before so I'm not clear as to how I can proceed (legally that is) for the next month until I can get the truck to it's final destination. Does anybody out there have any advice as to how I can squeak by legally here in Chicago for another month? Thanks!

I somehow missed that link on that page, d'oh! Thanks for the post. Since I don't actually want to register the vehicle here, I am wondering if I can go to a shady currency exchange and buy the temp tag without registering to buy me some time. There seem to be plenty of currency exchanges down here in the city. Thanks again

Can't you have somebody in colorado register your vehicle and send you the plates or tep tags till you get your plates? Then, in theory, you can just say that you are visiting chicago for a few weeks.

Archie, I think you're pretty close to spot on. The only problem with that idea is that I have to get a VIN inspection as well as pass emissions in CO. I'm going to be there on Friday without the truck (don't have enough time to drive it back this weekend) and I'm going to take all the paperwork and explain to the DMV folks what's going on. I'm pretty sure I can apply for a temporary registration that'll let me squeak by for another month when I can get the truck back to CO.

All you need in Illinois is the title and some paperwork to register a car. You can pick up your plates at that time. No need for inspections or emissions at the time. You might want to see if somebody in the Colorado club corner could provide some extra info on squeaking things through the details.
