The bump you are feeling after being stopped it the driveshaft slip yoke binding and is considered normal. Toyota says if should be greased every 5K miles, mine likes it about every 3K. It will be more noticeable after harder stops than light braking applications.

This is great news! I just purchased an '08 Cruiser and have experienced the nudging after an abrupt stop (usually). I thought there was something wrong with it. To hear it is "normal" is a big relief. Thanks, you seem to know a ton!

^^This

it's the power breaks engaging
^^Definitely not this......

I've also heard that if you stop abruptly the transmission is still in second gear and will hold that gear for a few seconds. The clunk has been described as the transmission kicking down to first gear after the vehicle's ECU determines that it is indeed stationary. The person who told me that drives a Tundra and has experienced the same thing. Mine does it occasionally but I've gotten used to it.

I took my fj to the dealer for that problem. They didn't mention the drive shaft. Mine was the air conditioner. Strange but when it's of it doesn't happen. Mine is an 07

Sent from my touch thingy

There is a tsb out for the rear end thump problem. The fix is a new driveline. The tsb is only for auto trans fjs. I had my rear driveshaft replaced at no cost.

its definitely the driveshaft. The GX470 is also plagued with this problem. It happens when the drive shaft gets into a small bind, then when stopped, the bind releases suddenly, causing the clunk and lurch forward.

It probably wont effect anything over the life of the truck except your sanity. That tsb will fix you up though. Our Gx does it every now and then, but I'm out of powertrain warranty so I'm living with it for now. Maybe one day I'll get the new driveshaft for $250~ and fix it myself.

Glad I found this thread - I thought my transmission was coming apart... 102000 miles on a '10 FJ

102. Impressive!

learn something new every day ... I knew that some people had their trucks fixed under warranty (of course too late for me by the time I found the info), but I had no idea it was an issue on other models ... I just live with it, and agree that it isn't as bad when making a slow, smooth stop ...
