I found myself wanting a light that could shine down from directly over the tailgate. I'm sensitive to too much light and prefer red to keep my eyes adjusted to the dark. I considered a lot of options that would mount directly to the underside of the lift gate but a) there weren't great options for mounting and running wires and b) they wouldn't be useful when the truck was closed up which isn't ideal as I sleep in there when I solo camp. I found this 18" gooseneck on Amazon that was dimmable and toggled between red and white. Perfect! I rivnutted it to the D pillar so its super solid, disassembled the control box, and installed the dimmer and toggle switch on the interior panel below. This way it can swing out directly over the gate and swing over the rear of the cab for use while I'm sleeping inside. I have it wired so that it can be used whether the ignition is on or not. Really happy with the outcome.
