My tailgate motor is very weak. I have new weatherstrip in the back for the window to slide in, the mechanism has been cleaned and greased.

Can the motor be taken apart? I am wondering if the brushes are worn (does it even have any?)

Could another motor, such as from a 4 runner, be adapted to it?

When I stripped teh rig for painting and cleaning, I redid all the connections and think I have a good ground. Nice suggestion, I will check it out.

The motor has always seemed weak. It does better in warmer weather.

I have a spare. There is a place up here who has rebuilt small motors like that for me as well.

the old crusty grease doesnt help matters at all. Mine was markedly faster after a cleaning, new gear, and cleaning the contacts etc. keep in mind the tailgate saftey switch is part of the circuit and it can get corroded contacts. I was able to clean it up a bit and it worked better.

I forgot, I installed the new gear as well. My tailgate switch is in good shape.

They should be pretty quick. Mine sometimes gets a little stuck on the new weatherstrip.

There's your hint Nat. Probably not the motor. Suggests that your problem is with the grease or rubber. Have you tried a little wax on the contact points between the window and rubber? Does the window speed slow up when it rises into contact with the rubber guides?
