I know this is a very old thread, but did this ever get solved? I'm running into the same issue. No taillights, but brakes, signals and backup all work. 87 FJ60

I have a 1987 FJ60 and the Tail and Rear Running Lights suddenly stopped working. We have chased ALL the obvious suspects--fuses, grounds, bulbs, the light switch tested good, wiring, fixed misc loose connections and wires. STILL does not work. We are also getting a max of 4.8 volts at the tail light socket and 12 volts at the brake light. We've run out of ideas...any suggestions?

I had the same problem it took alot of testing but I found my issue, the ground at the licence plate lights was rusted and shorting out. many hours to diagnos minuites to fix.

My issue was a little bit worse... The connector plug had corroded complete, and a few of the wires were broken, as well as a rats nest of wiring for a trailer harness. I had to rebuild my entire rear harness. I bought factory color coded wires from Coolerman and rebuilt it all. Looks brand new and everything works properly now.
