I have just purchased a 1996 Landcruiser BJ70 with the 4.2 litre 1HZ normally aspirated diesel engine. The truck is equipped with an electronic tachometer that is not functioning. Would anyone be able to tell me where the sending unit for this tachometer would be located? Are they prone to failure? Any ideas for troubleshooting would be helpful.

Thanks

Gerry

They stopped making BJ70s in 1990. If it has a 1HZ it must be a HZJ70,which is a SWB. The info is on the firewall.

The tach sender is on the injection pump between pump and engine block. Its not easy to get to. They are prone to failure and they cost about $200AUD at a dealer

I located the spot where the tach sensor should be but it appears that there is a plug where the sensor would normally fit. It is possible that the injection pump on my vehicle was replaced with one at some point (from a vehicle that did not have a tach). Have you seen this before on other injection pumps, and if so, is it possible to drill out or remove(if it is threaded) the plug and install the sensor or does the pump have something else inside that triggers the tach sensor on a tachometer equipped pump? Again, any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks.

It is theaded and needs a largish spanner,I have a spare pump but I have never removed the sensor.
I would say yours most likely stopped working and it was removed.
I think the post 98 models use another method and have a plug where the sensor was but a later model pump wouldnt work on yours.
If you download the 1HZ manual and go to page FU35,it just says unscrew the sensor and remove the o ring.
It may have some more info in the pump reassembley section

Thanks for your reply. Do you know where I can find the manual for the 1HZ so I can download it?

Thanks again.
