The antenna is grounded. The coax carries the ground from the radio. The radio gets it's ground from the battery ground lead. If the battery ground to block/body is compromised, then the radio/coax/antenna becomes the ground for the whole vehicle - it can't carry the current and poof/flames/sparks/death/dismemberment etc occurs The fuse in the ground lead protects against this.

This goes for ANY item that is directly grounded to the battery that can become the 'weak-link/ground'...

Ahh, makes total sense. I never ground directly to the batt terminal (always use chassis ground).

In the case of radios you should make a direct connection to the battery ground.
