Bob, I couldn't figure out a way to do it cleanly on the outside of the swingout without welding, and I ain't no welder! 
Having mounted it on the inside, I'm pretty pleased with the location.
Ken, I will take up your suggestion of a hinged heat-shield that swings up, that should be pretty easy to fabricate and will be another layer of protection.
