80 guy here. Been working on my swing out here and there for a few weeks. I’m ready to do the drop from corner to bumper and can’t decide whether to do a lap joint, or something similar to drop the main beam down, or just add a spacer with a latch (thoughts?). I found a killer latch at rock hard 4x4 and dropping the whole beam would work best for this, to make use of the inside of the tube for the latch, as well as stop it from banging into the tailgate. Seems to me it may be more sturdy with the bulk of the main beam tighter to the bumper.

How much sag should I account for so that it rests on a landing plate, but I don’t have to lift up on it too much? 1/4”? I have a 33 with a steel Tacoma spare feels like about 65 lbs. I have no other add ons. 3/16 2x4 main and 2x2 for rise and tire attachment.

Was there more work to this that isn't pictured? The tire carrier will want to flutter fore/aft, especially on washboard roads.

Negative. But I see the first post with another support perpendicular to the straight ones I have. I plan on adding a 3rd piece now with 2x2 spanning frame to base of spindle 👍

I would brace it at least a bit somewhere in the middle. The tire is heavy and at the end of a long lever (my 33" on 18" was 50kg/110lb).

OH man - I wish a retrofit like this was available off the shelf. I want to get the spare up and out of the way and mount my bike rack a bit higher but don't need the extra weight, rigidity, and $$$ of an aftermarket bumper.

When I made mine, I added two lower gussets to support the vertical weight. My main support truss is a 1/8” 2x2 square tube. I’ve had mine on for 2 years now, hundreds of miles of trails, thousands of miles of on road use, and it’s going strong still. I actually had to use a hilift jack on the arm to remove it and regrease the bearings when doing an inspection on it last year. The mount is fixed on the rear cross member well enough, it picked the whole rear end up while trying to pull the arm. Bad seal made for a bit of corrosion which gummed up the bearing from releasing easy, since been fixed and sealed perfectly. All in all, I have about $95 in mine.
PS: don’t mind the shat welds, I ran out of bottle gas on the last two FRONT FACING welds 🤦🏼‍♂️

There are some available. GGM offers one that is 65lbs of added weight.

I love seeing these projects completed. Each a little different in their own way which is awesome. Mine has been solid since completion and one of my favorite mods.

Truth be told, I had saved multiple pics from your build to reference as I built mine 😂
