I never really have felt the need for a wider front end. I was looking for the front disc brakes. I read that SOR sells a conversion kit, I think that the '76 axle had discs, or should I be looking for a fj60 axel?

When I did this swap on my truck I got the bearings from Kurt. All Japanese bearing and everything he sent worked like a charm.

On a side note I agree with John, get the knuckles and do the swap. In my experience its like the official landcruiser initiation. =)

You will need to clearance the axle ball section to fit the 79 and later birfs, but it's not a big deal. if you stay with standard "low" steering, you will need to shim the tie rod ends or find ends with a larger taper that will fit the tie rod.

you can put a 60 axle under a pig, but it involves outboarding the springs.

Thanks for the input. Just gonna pay off some debt and then reward myself with the fun of a new project bigger than just doing new door panels (which turned out sick!). The extent of my knowledge in this area has been in doing the burfield seals out. I am hoping that the disc thing won't be much harder...?

Both are some of the best mods to do. The steering mod requires welding but is fairly straight forward.
It is your choice as to which to do first...is you steering is bad you can rebuild the centering arm and tie rod ends for not too much $$. Brakes and steering are both importan!

Hey lets see a picture of those "SICK!" doorpanels.

In my humble opinion disc brakes are FAR more important than loosing "Armstrong" steering.

Thanks for the insights. I thought discs to be more important too. I will go and buy a card for my camera and try to figure out this camera thing. Now I feel silly about saying they were sick. I 'll put them up and let you see.

Just an FYI I also have all the 60 stuff you'd need to do the swap. Where are you again?

79 and later will be bigger birf bells and shorter shaft with Aidan hubs and wide pattern knuckles which are stronger, but will require clearancing the axle ball and taper issues on the tie rod ends.

76-78 will be a bit weaker component wise and have birfs that stick out farther and are harder to find, but will most likely will bolt right in.

IIRC..I did the IPOR box/shock mount bracket and a 60 ps pump...no welding required. Just an option:meh:
