I have a 1991 2wd pick up with a 22re. The odometer reads 277k. It has a 5 speed. Right now I am trying to sell the 2 wheel drive but am planning on buying a 4 wheel drive in a few months.
I am really impressed with this engine. It doesn't leak oil. It has plenty of power and purrs.

Is this a popular/good engine for a four wheel drive candidate? Whould I be able to use the same tranny? What years would I be open to looking for swap candidates?

I'd really like a truck with an extended cab and small seats in the back or a pre 1990 4 runner.

The reason I'm considering this is because the 2wd I currently have has a horrible body and is not getting much attraction from buyers, but I love the engine.

So you want to find another truck and swap this motor into it or do you want to convert this truck to 4wd?

Trans most likely will need to be swapped for a 4wd version, or at least have the tail housing swapped to accommodate a t-case.

That motor ran in trucks thru 95 and if you want a 4wd xtra cab then I would just look around and buy one.

If the body is good just needs some tlc, the 2wd frames are good candidates for a SAS because they still have the nice arched frame rails up front. The problem is that you would likely have to swap the oil pan which could open up a can as far as your motor not leaking oil.

Guess it depends on how much you want to invest in it. It can be done but if you have to DD it then buying another one would be a better option.

I didn't even consider converting it to 4wd. I think that would cost more than I'm willing to invest and it would also take a lot of time I don"t have. I think I could manage an engine install but any more than that I can't do now.

Well I'm glad I asked because I learned a lot. I had no idea the frames where different. It makes sense.

I think I will just sell this one and look for a complete truck when I'm ready.
(it passed smog today so it should sell fast!)

My original thinking was to keep my eye open for a super cheap deal. Like a rig missing the engine or with a blown engine. I thought if I found something less than $1000 and all I had to do was swap the engine then it would be cost effective.
I guess it's still a possibility. I just have to figure out if I would want to invest that kind of time.
