Well now that I've committed to buy the 72 Pig and '85 parts rig I've got to get them from Tucson to Monterey. Current plan is to start my drive either late Saturday (Feb. 3rd) and spend the night with friends in Phoenix, or do the whole drive starting early Sunday morning. I'm flying down there Friday to take it for an extended test drive around Tucson to make sure there are no issues with it before attempting the 800 mile trek. I've also got to replace the water pump on my Fj62 so my buddy can drive that back in late February.
What I'm hoping for is some folks along the way that can help me out if I have problems on the drive. I'm carrying what tools I can with me on the plane but not sure what all I need to bring. I know it's a lot to ask for someone you're never met but if you're willing to pony up a phone number that I can call if I have issues it would be much appreciated. Also if the drive goes south and I need to put these somewhere for a couple of weeks along the way that would be great too.
I plan to drive from Tucson to Phoenix then along I-10, up I-15 vs. going through the grapevine across to Barstow and finally to the house. Since I'm towing the 60 I'm giving myself 16 hours to make the drive (what a long day). Any and all help would be much appreciated.
Also, what would be a good assortment of tools to bring with me and back-up parts like fuel filter, etc....
Thanks

Are you towing the '60 with the '55? That's pretty overloaded! Does the '55 still have 4 wheel drums? It might be a death sentence on the down hill side!

I've towed a '55 body on a flat bed with the '60 and it felt squirrelly on the down hill sections. I towed it from Santa Clarita over the Grapevine all the way to Vancouver, B.C. I've also towed a rolling chassis '62 over the same route. Neither was real comforting.

I'm hoping that I can sell off a good portion of the 60 on the drive back, like the doors, engine and tranny. That should lighten it up quite a bit. Plus the route I'm taking only has two sections with hills. One just east of Palm Springs and then the other just north of Ontario. I'm still not 100% sure I'm going to do it. I need to get eyes on and some mileage on the Pig before I'll know for sure. If I get the water pump on the 62 fixed I may use that as my tow vehicle and save the 55 for the next trip.

Status?

Drew,
Did you end up buying these cruisers and putting everything together for this trip? I was just curious. Sounds like you already had a support crew here in Phoenix. I'm booked up Sunday but if you run into any longer term issues I'm sure some of the CSC guys here could lend a hand.

Norm-
Yes I did, unfortunately I can't go this weekend so I've had to push this trip back to 16 - 18 Feb. I'm changing my game plan a little bit also. I'm now going to tow the 60 with the 62 that weekend and then my buddy is going to drive the 55 back the following weekend. I decided if the clutch is worn on the 55 it would be tough to tow the 60 behind it. It's not too hard to drive clutchless with no load. My Phoenix support network has no mechanical abilities beyond knowing where the gas tank is. Great people, just not gearheads!
