How would I have gotten air in the system if I didn’t crack any lines?
Also, when I push on the brake pedal now, there is a much louder swooshing sound under the dash, like air coming out or going in. Don’t remember it being this loud.
All I did was unbolt the MC from the Booster, pull it out and away enough to check the depth to the back of the plunger and adjust the rod.
It’s a threaded rod within a shaft with a splinned end, then reattached the MC.
Now no more pedal.
Also I saw a thread on how to check the operation of your Booster but I can’t find it any where. Any one know the stets or have a link?

Rear brakes are adjusted all the way in as far as i can get them. It seems to slow the seizing process by doing that. And they still worked fine.
I am very mechanically inclined, I took this thing down to the frame and put it back together my self. Also rebuilt the carb (first time) and all is well. This brake thing is my only real issue. If I did, by chance, do something to start a leak in the Booster. Is it something I can rebuild my self? In other words is it going to be more then I can handle and am I going to need very specialized equipment to do it? Kit $300 or rebuilt from SOR $500. What should I do?

Sorry if my replies read like I thought you're not mechanically inclined. I'm sure anybody smart enough to drive a cruiser is good at the wrench too :)

Me thinks if the shoes are adjusted all the way in, it takes a few pumps on the pedal to push them far enough to contact the drum. I recommend you adjust the rears first and see if need for the multiple pumps go away.

It is possible now that the increased diaphragm travel is needed, you've uncovered a booster leak. I'd have it rebuilt. A guy who does cruiser boosters is Booster Dewey at http://home.teleport.com/~umpqua/ . He does cruiser boosters for $125 and would even plate it yellow cad (actually he uses zinc) like new for another $50.

Any one want to take a shot at explaining this one?
If you read the thread from top to bottom you know my brake issues. Additionally, My cruiser, just coming out of a frame off, needs a tune up and such. It runs a little rough and I thought it just needed timing set. Well turns out my plug wires were shot to. Nearly all wires hade burn spots and cracks from where they sat on the headers, mani, etc. I put in a set of new Plug wires in and now cruiser runs like a champ. The strange thing is, now the brakes don’t lock up on me. Could it be that the timing was so bad because all the plug wires were loosing spark and arcing all over the engine that that was effecting the vacuum and in-turn effecting the brakes? ie cousing them to seize.

Poor vacuum is the ONLY way I can think of that timing would affect the braking system.

I think you need a priest to perform an exercision for you......
:D

that's wierd...

Ouch. Around here, priests don't do that. Rabbis still do though, but what if you're already "done"? :D

Seriously, my feeling is that before the brakes locked up because of the hydraulic pressure build up. The reason the fronts did not lock up was that there was something wrong. Look at possibly glazed or grease contaminated brake pads, etc.

Mort:

I thought I posted to your post but I guess it was another guy with the same issue.

Air leaks in the system create the very same effect you mentioned as the issue in your first post. I had a truck that would do the EXACT same thing. Lock up happened at the very slightest touch of the pedal at the REARS and not the fronts. Issue....cracked brake line. It is very very inconsistent with what you might think intuitively, but for some reason, the air in the system creates an environment where the cylinders cannot release back to a normal position. When I fixed the line and bled the brakes, problem gone instantly. No MC, no PB. Just air in the system. You might have a different issue, but I would not rule out air.

Good luck.
