stripped head bolt

i just did a head gasket and timing set on my 85 pickup 600 miles ago. i went to retorque the head (63 ft lbs) and one of the head bolts stripped. well the bolt is fine, its the block threads that went. is there any way to fix without taking the head back off?

that sucks bro! i think you gota pull the head and helicoil that sucker! i dont see any other way to do it!

Helicoil or Timesert (if they still make them).

I've never known anyone that's had to helicoil a headbolt, will be interesting to see if it holds...

I had a block that the headbolt boogered the threads when I took it out. I did the helicoil and it did work for a while. I think a timesert would be better if you could find the size. I think it is a 12x1.50 thread. I still have a few helicoils left from that job!

I'd second the timesert. But before putting those bolts back in, I'd run a tap through EVERY head bolt hole... and then buy a set of ARP studs to prevent this from happening again.

where do you get a timesert. never heard of one b 4. what is it? A solid Heli coil? i talked to a shop that said they would put some sort of an insert, that was kinda like a heli coil but better, in it for a 100 bucks. if it goes in like a heli i will do it my self. they said they do alot of them and they hold good

well it seams that only a machine shop even knows what a timesert is. i ordered a kit today for 84 bucks and the shop wants to by it back from me so they'll have one.

put the timesert in today. it was really easy to install and it held like oe threads. let you know how retorque goes,,,,,,,,,,,,

the retorque went great. not one bolt moved. i used a new flang head gasket from napa. i think it was a victor rienz.
