Can someone in the know help me understand why I have a spliced yellow wire in the Maf harness which leads through the firewall behind the glove box and stuffed back in a wire harness? From there I'm not sure where it goes.

You don't tell us what year you are working on, but based on the lack of a PAIR system, and it appears to be a 1FZ...96 or 97.
If that's the case see if the yellow wire is bypassing pin22 at connector IH1
Theres a facctory splice in that area but its Y-R to Y-R that changes to Y at IH1 pin 22, maybe someone had to bypass that connector?
