Stock 40 Brake Master Cylinder``

The rear reservoir is losing break fluid. Close and careful inspection of the wheel slaves and break lines do not indicate any fluid leaks. Could the fluid be leaking into the vacuum tank? And why does just the rear reservoir leak?

Yes.

And why does just the rear reservoir leak?

Because the rear seal is bad on the rear portion of the master cylinder.


Remove the master cylinder from the booster and see if you have fluid back there.....

You should not have to disconnect any of the brake lines to perform this inspection.



The master cylinder, while a single unit, has two separate, sealed pistons in the bore of the master, supplying fluid to the individual circuits. (front and rear)

Thanks for your help. Are there rebuild parts available or should I replace the entire assembly?

replace with new (I hate rebuilt masters, never had any luck with them)

Sorry for the hi-jack but could I put a new master with a booster on my 67'

with a spacer, yes..

Or cut the firewall rib and redrill the firewall.
