CLC... big hello from the west coast.

Hoping you could help me with a lil problem.

Steering on my '74 FJ40 with lots of play. Feels unsafe over 40 mph.

Do y'all know of anyone who rebuilds steering boxes? Eventually planning on PS, but need a fix for now.

Thanks.

Ps. Club is growing very nicely!

You can take some of the slack out of the original box by adjusting it. There is a lock nut on the side with a flat head stud in the middle. Loosen the nut then tighten (a little) the stud in the middle. If you tighten it too much you can cause your steering to lock up so be careful. My 74 was the same way and this trick helped. Good luck bro and great to hear from you!

Hey Jeff

Great to hear from you.

I looked for the screw a while ago (without removing the box) and couldn't find it. Is it something present on a '74 or is it only seen if u remove the box?

Had I still been in MS, I'd have me a saginaw and keg and big 'ol wrenchin party!

Sani glad to hear from you!

The nut and screw are on the motor side of the steering box. It's there I promise.

Found it and done. No more death curves! Thanks Bodean

Just make sure to turn it from stop to stop to make sure it doesn't lock up either way. Glad to help Sani!!
