I have 24v HJ61. When starting, the starter sometimes misses, I get a whirring noise from the starter but the engine does not crank. It seems likely that the bendix is failing/not extending. I have pulled the starter and done the tests in the H/12H-T Field Service Manual pages that are attached to this post.
On the continuity tests from page ST-16 I get 0.6 ohms between terminal C and terminal 50. I get 2.6 ohms between terminal 50 and the magnetic switch body. So I think my starter passed this part of the test.
However, when testing the starter by connecting it to 24v as described on ST-19, steps 1 and 2, I get nothing. Is this result consistent with the fact that when the starter is installed in the truck it will engage on at least 50% of starting attempts? And is it consistent with the continuity measurements above? Is it possible I have the 24v power supply/bench test set up wrong and that is why nothing is happening?
Update: I also performed no-load performance test from ST-19, step 4. I get a small noise right when I make the connect like it is trying to start spinning. That's it.
Thanks!
