The starter mount of my 85 LJ70 broke & I'm looking for a new starter. Any one knows where I can get an aftermarket starter. or any suggestions aside from the dealer.

The case broke?

Anyway it could be welded back up

Where are you helps the suggestions. In Canada 4wheel auto sells starters. So does GandS cruiser parts...........

brownbear,

I'm from Toronto, Ontario Canada. I'm not sure if you call it case but there's 2 bolts goes on the starter motor that attach to the engine. Mine one of them was snap & now I only have one bolt holding the starter. It looks like it's aluminum & I called local starter rebuilder here & indicates that they can't help me.

Its called a flange and as BB said it could probably be welded.

thanks, so it's good to know if this could be welded. I just need to find someone that would do it for me. I just checked the price for a replacement & they ain't cheap. $ 450 CAD plus taxes

Buy some contacts for it while you have it out. 30 bucks ish....... try searching contacts in the diesel section.

take your starter to a machine shop that can weld aluminum. Starter shops don't weld.

You may want to run the whole starter over to a good Auto electric rebuilder, the shop we use here in B.C has been able to order up replacement starter drive housings for various Toyota starters. $80 IIRC.
Toyota part # on the LJ70 drive housing is 28115-54070 FWIW

80 dollar is cheaper than what the welder would charge IMOP. Anytime I go near a welding shop it cost more than 100.... LOL

Sheldon what is a good starter rebuild shop in BC? I might want to send my spare there...

Sheldon,

I call one Toyota dealer here in Toronto about part #28115-54070 (drive housing) & it's not in there system. I found an auto electric rebuilder that is willing to weld the flange but he wanted $300 CAD. He said he can't weld it without dismantling the starter, etc. Do you think I can order the flange from this guy in BC?

Does anyone what other toyota trucks use this kind of starter in Canada.

OK.. DON'T do that.
2L-T starter is a US Toyota part and list price is on a COMPLETE Toyota reman 2.5kw starter Part #28100-54090-84 is only $202.73 USD
Call your Toyota dealer

We use ASI Rebuilders in Abbotsford 604-864-2198
I am pretty confident that if you brought your drive housing into a good shop they would be able to match it up in their book.

I've been to a couple of shop here in Toronto & no one wants to touch my starter. So I'll try to run this part # with Toyota & see what they have. Thanks again

Sheldon,

I called Toyota dealership here in Toronto & ask them about the p/n you've given. None available here in Ontario but there's one in BC toyota dealership. Toyota told me they can order it for me from BC for $300 CAD. What a shame my started is working fine but useless because of the broken flange.
