starter engaging after engine starts

Just had a bizzare one. Turned key in ignition to start car and what I presumed was the starter (high pitched cranking noise) continuously tried to start the car even after it actually fired up. Turned key off and car still try's to start itself - lasted about 3 mins
Was about to pull the battery but then it all settled down and run fine....

bad starter? solenoid/relay sticking, dirty contacts?

car starts fine now

read this and thinking of pulling the battery anyway until i can check things out in detail

Likely the solenoid is sticking. Easy enough to pull the starter and replace the contacts and plunger.

Sounds like selenoid/plunger is sticking. Parts are cheap for the rebuild. And while its out a good time to attack PHH and fuel filter if you havent.

A fire hazard for sure so use caution. Be ready to unhook batt if you must start to go get parts.

Agree, most often is excessively worn contacts.
