Starter and RPM Question - AHHHHH

Well, the good news is I got my '74 up and running this weekend. Installed a rebuilt 2F engine - which was a breeze (thank you everyone for the tips and suggestions.) Installed the rebuilt carburetor from my original F engine. Only problem when starting up was the starter would engage at the ACC position.

Prior to (with the F engine), I had no problems with the starter. Today, when I click over the ignition to the "ACC" side the starter kicks in. When I go to the "NOR" normal position (2nd stop) it does not do it. And lastly, it will kick over the starter in the IGN position.

I doubled checked the wiring and everything looks good. B/W wire to solenoid, etc.

I can't believe it to be the ignition switch for it worked fine when I had the F engine in.

Any suggestions or comments?


And lastly - I installed a tachometer. What is the correct driving RPM for the 2F engine and what is the max driving RPM on this engine.

Well, Joel. Clearly you are getting juice to the starter circuit in the ACC position. That means you have a wire crossed, or (much less likely, I agree) the switch has some gunk and is shorting. Did you do anything with your tachometer in that area? (yes, you did, didn't you).
 
Oh, yes. Redline is 4000 RPM. Most driving is between 2000-3000.

As a precaution and a "stupid" check, I disabled the tachometer completely. That is to say, all wiring was unhooked. It still did the same thing - kicked over in the ACC position.

I was advised to take the ignition switch out and to hook up a meter and see what develops as I click over to each position. Maybe it is the switch!?!?!?

P.S. Anyone install a Hellroaring BIC-85150A isolator? Plan to hook it up for my winch (after I fix my ignition switch problem).
 
That was smart: to do a stupid check.

I don't have the diagram of the switch in front of me, but it seems from the diagram in my head that the ACC is way over from the starter position. You might look closely at the switch plug, however. That might have melted from resistance heat and could be a potential for shorting over. I have found that the terminal plugs get corroded over time and the resistance just keeps rising, causing the things to really heat up.
