:lol::lol: I guess Drew's back up comm is a solar powered/hand crank sat phone. I wonder if he has a sextan hidden in his box of onboard goodies?

A sextant would be really useful in the lower mainland. You could use it at least 12 times a year. :)

Drew, I get the sense that you might have a phobia of being lost or not being able to talk to someone when you're out on the trail.

Been there done that... don't wont to do it again. I was a boy scout most of my childhood and took the 'be prepaired' moto to heart. Plus if I have a way of checking in the girlfriend might not worry as much, making it easier to go on more outtings.

Drew, am I right in thinking that this would require an APRS station somewhat close by? If there are none, as in Guatemala, could one find you using a handheld tuned to the right frequency and a GPS?

there are a few in Guatemala but if you are out of range of a digi the system still works radio to radio but you would require a setup that alows you to receve. Plus you are going digital and the range is way better then voice.

I do have a sextan and know how to use it... but I don't take it with me. however I do take a GPS and a compass along with paper and electronic maps with me. and for the backup system I have asked Santa for a SPOT:)

Ha! I told you he'd have one. :D Doesn't matter if he could use it or not. I have the feeling that Drew goes by the "most toys" winning rule....

I thought 'most toys' meant most toyotas. :)

Time to start again, I guess.
