I recently bought a Spen trailer off of Craigslist. The Spen is a civilian copy of the M-416 with a tailgate and ball-type hitch. It was built in the late 1940's and sat in a barnyard for a long time since then and needs some restoration. I cut the welds that held the tailgate hinge and straightened the bar. I plan to cut the rusted out bottom of the tailgate and weld in a pipe. I cut the round fenders off and will add flat top fenders. The front corners need to be patched and then the whole thing will get sandblasted and painted. I think I'll keep the axle and hubs after I clean and repack them.

Well, can't be a copy of the M416 since the manufacturing dates are separated by at least a decade.

Yea, I guess I always refer to 1/4 ton trailers as 416's, too many years living out of the back of one in the Marines.
None-the-less, it appears to be a civilian copy of a WWII military trailer. I'll get that fifty years of rust and abuse out of it this winter.
