speedo cable noise?

So it sounds like my speedo cable has been making some noise until the truck warms up. Its not consistent with engine rpm, but land speed. Ive searched but have had no luck finding how to lube it, or if it can be lubed, there are a few threads that talk about replacing.

Has anyone done this before?

I just removed the outer cable from the speedo and gearbox, pull out the inner cable, wipe with light grade engine oil ,then slide back in, you could apply more oil as the inner cable is being pushed back into the outer cable.

As always wish I read this before buying a new part. Mine whines and the speedo is jumpy. Might try this until the next time I pull my dash apart

Might also use the lube used for bicycle and motorcycle cable as it has a little metal nozzle that forces lube down the cable?

so last night I pulled the cable and filled the tube with cleaner. I covered the end with a plastic bag and used my compressor to blow air through it. Alot of gunk came out. I cleaned the cable, lubed it, and reinserted. The cable doesn't jump as much but it could probably be cleaned a few more times as there was some dried red colored grease on the cable itself.

How much is a new cable? Id have to look and see if its easy to replace.

Don't remember the cost of the new cable. But it wasn't to bad from amayama.com. you could probably replace it without removing the whole dash though.
