Using the Grapevine (I5)/or Big Bear as a reference.
How much of a Dog is the FZJ80 with 315s and stock gearing? Please include how you dealt with the underperformance while waiting to regear.

Thanks.

You'll feel it dude. Basically no more overdrive.. and quite possibly 2nd gear in tough sections. It depends how long you want to suffer for. I would go a few months without gears, but thats it.

If you want to feel what it's like, come over here and i'll let you drive our setup :D

It will take some getting used to. Ive done it a couple of times without any added gear in the car, and its a doggg. I cant imagine it with the car loaded.

You will be using power button often.

Night and day difference with 4.88s

it SUCKS!

especially up big bear or the grapevine. had the power button on all the time.

I run, 255/85/16 toyo's and dont really have a problem unless I am loaded heavy or towing a trailer. but my truck is light the only thing I have on it is weld on sliders, If you have a arb/sliders/rear bumper and then stuff inside... like dave says its a slow ride..... depending on your lift look at 305/70/16's I have MTRs in this size on cathys truck and they are great and dont change the effective gearing all that much...

Thanks for the replies.
Knowing that your posts are based on driving through Grapevine/BB imakes it much easier to imagine (and decide :D) how it would be like with stock gears. Its not like I powered thru those areas with my 285s!

If I stick with 33s, I will be leaning towards the 305s for the width - will look better with the Heavies (which I have currently) or Js ;) :grinpimp:.

Power, 80's and grapevine are not allowed in the same sentence!

Coming home last Sunday - I have 285's BTW - had a 2 ton trailer. Hit the bottom of the southbound grade doing just over 70. I never lifted my foot off the floor with the skinny pedal. No trucks, cars, etc. forced me to lift. By the time I got to the top I was down to a mind bogling 30 mph!

Can you even imagine what that painful climb would have been like on 315's?

Similar stories going up route 74 to Idlywild.

Safe to say you get passed by 18 wheelers going up the grapevine?

How does larger tires affect the stock drive shaft components under normal driving conditions?

Yes - I have been passed by 18 wheelers going up the grapevine...but only when towing! 285's don't really affect anything but the speedo reading a little.

Wow. I guess I didn't fully appreciate the re-gear done by the PO - 4.56 with BFG 315/75s. As a point of reference for when you re-gear: My truck weighs over 7000lbs when loaded and has all manner of drag with the RTT and other accessories and I can hold 45-50mph on those long grades and I'm fairly conservative with the throttle. For normal freeway driving, at 65mph I'm turning just under 2400rpm and if I don't watch, I'll be cruising at 80mph without even noticing. It's very smooth. I think the 4.88s change that significantly.

As everyone has said, you definately feel it! You also want to make sure your PM of your cooling system is up to date. Last summer I went over the Grapevine with 315's, stock gears and pulling a 2500lb tent trailer and gear...embarrassing. Shifted between 2nd and 3rd gear the whole way and dont think I broke 50 either direction. The Scanguage read high 220's the whole time and the JDM fan went on shortly after that trip.

Yes, I still need 4.88's!

I go up the grapevine 3-4 times a month. The 80 is already a slow and the 315's don't help, but it's not a problem.

If you're hauling a trailer, I'd say it's almost a must.

Do you have 315s now without regearing?

Yes, 315's with stock gears.

With OD off and the PWR button on, I can hold at about 55 mph up the grapevine. If I shift into 2nd, I can go a little faster and pass a car. But I'm on the lighter side compared to some of the others.
