2mbb's tire carrier on the cheap (my version!):

You'll need one of the eye bolts you see in his set up, and a large U bolt.

1. Drill two holes in the metal under the window appropriately spaced for the two legs of the U bolt. Set the tire in there first and get an idea as to where you need to drill the holes....

2. Put the eye bolt on the U bolt and put into the holes you just drilled. Eye bolt hangs on the outside.... duh.

3. Fender washers on the inside of the U bolt (both sides would be good I guess).

4. Put the eye bolt through the lug nut hole and use a bolt and washer to tighten.

5. Done.

My 33x11.5 destination has been mounted this way for about two years. It's very solid, and very cheap. 2mbb's looks nicer, but I don't have metal fab tools.

try a search, there was a post a while back about making your own. I did this method, cost less that $10 in hardware at the local ACE works great for my 31" spare. I know it would fit a 33".

Yeah, that might have been mine... I know I've done the 'run down' on it before, as I did above.

Yoop- I'll take a few snaps tonight... I believe the U bolt is 1/4" thick, with a 3" width at the tips. The eye bolt I used accepted a 1/2" nut... so a bit thicker than the U bolt.

VT- My U-bolt also has the backing plate, but in lieu of that use fenders. The hook is a good idea, you could use a bandsaw to cut the eye-bolt into a hook style as well.

that looks great. any better shots of the floor brackets? do you just have a rubber cap where the tubing meets the windows?

Jason: I don't have pictures of the foot. It's the same idea as the feet on the side, but it's bolted through the floor. I cut the carpet and pad around the legs. All the feet have backing plates on the other side of the sheet metal.

The upper ends of the tubing are cut at 45deg. They stand off from the window glass about one-half inch. I've thought about putting some rubber on it just in case.

Cool! Thats gives me ideas too. I have to get outside and see how much space all my crap takes up and whether or not this is doable. The other thing too is that if my spare is not on my roof rack I can leave that thing off for times that I dont need it.

Sorry for the wait.... Here's the cheap version.

the last pic shows both the U bolt and eye bolt. The eye bolt exits the frame into the tire rim where it is secured by the washer and nut seen in the second pic.

does your tire touch the window?

I think so... but don't care really. It doesn't squeak or bang against it. If you wanted to space it out from the window you could attach some thick rubber spacers against the moutning surface to space it out a bit.

Oh, and because I like to brag..... notice the massive amount of lead needed to balance those M/T's?

;p

sweet......

doc,
thats one big effin tire!!!!
i think in NJ, where i live, the is some sort of law about blocking windows.

It's actually kind of nice to have identical tires on both vehicles... if one blows out TWO tires for some reason... I'm covered. Well, except for the backspacing issue. Those Taco wheels have less backspacing than the 80 wheels.

And, it's not really that big... the knobs make it look bigger than it is. 33x11.5".
