Southeast NM Wheeling

I'm relocating from PHX to DFW shortly and am trying to figure where I can find some wheeling other than private parks in Texas (since there's very little public land). Looking at the map it seems that there's some stuff in SE NM, so I've come to the experts. What's down there? Type, length, etc. would be a big help.

I've been on several of the FS roads around Ruidoso. They were pretty mild but I know some others in the club have been on some more challenging stuff near Alamogordo. I would plan to attend the Thrill on the Hill event next year to get a good introduction to it.

We have a few folks in El Paso and Las Cruces on this forum as well who could probably provide some suggestions.

If you are moving to Dallas your nearest good wheeling will likely be Clayton or Katemcy (when it reopens). Gilmar is closer yet, with more hill climbs and dirt than rocks (depending on what you are in to). The drive to New Mexico from DFW is pretty far, if you are going to come all that way I would just keep going to Cruces.

There is some sort of off road park just east of Roswell or Artesia (I can't remember which) but I've never been there. I think it's mostly sand dunes.

Barnwell Mountain is a real nice ORV park, everything from mild to wild. Some very steep and challenging stuff, lots of trees, great camp sites, compressed air and ice on site, only 5 miles from a town (Gilmer, TX): Barnwell Mountain Recreation Area

A new Katemcy Rocks, supposedly a lot like the old one, is going to open in February or March: Katemcy Rocks ... Rock Crawling Texas Style

The city of Bridgeport has also recently opened a new ORV park that has some pretty fun stuff in it, including some good rocky climbs: Bridgeport, TX - Official Website - Northwest OHV Park
