Source for 2H pistons?

Believe me. I was watching that 85 2H engine that was for sale. However, I wasnt sure what was wrong with my engine till now. I just checked it more seriously and its sold.

I don't know about the 12HT, I was thinking about this: 1HDT Specter Off-Road Land Cruiser Parts - Page 035 Land Cruiser Engines for $11K

I looked at that 12HT link. I just can't swing $6K. I know in Canada 2Hs are no big deal but I just payed a lot of money for this truck and it seems I got screwed some. I appreciate the 12HT is better but I cant do it. Maybe I should have found a rust free FJ60 in texas and then bought this engine but I would still be looking at $10K. I was hoping to buy this truck for $8k and be able to drive it and save for a turbo. I will know more when I get into the engine but when reading RufusTheDufus's thread it seems he got away with new pistons, rings and a hone. That is what I am hoping to do.
The day after I committed to buying this rig I found out I am going to be a father. I felt bad buying a truck I didnt need and spending money I shouldnt but I did it anyway. Well here I am. This just makes things worse.

Dude,
I just live down the road from you. I am also importing a diesel here to Maryland, started out as a 1980 BJ40. Out went the original B and in a 1HZ = HZJ40. Ought to be here by the summer. Maybe we can combine resources, e.g. parts sources, injection shops, etc. Not too many of us Toyota diesel owners around here. BTW I feel you on the high cost of all of this.

Cool. We can start our own club. I think his name is "derelict " on here that just bought the red BJ60 and brought it up to the DC/VA area. As for the cost of parts, it kills me being a Toyota/Lexus tech. I have had my poor parts guy running all these OEM part numbers which all come up as bad numbers. Its kind of irritating to have access to the whole Toyota network but not be able to order any part I want.:censor:

Sunday Update.

I pulled the head this weekend.

And here is what I found. The number 2 compression ring is worthless. The ring lands don't look too bad but they are out of spec. The other pistons look much better but the cyclinders are still in spec so that saves some trouble. The bearings look great too.

I did the seafoam treatment twice and I guess it just couldnt break this up.

I´m going into my 3rd year of ordering parts for my rig. Initially I got those messages too. Because these rigs were never imported here a lot of times the part numbers, won´t show in the U.S. database. I found that it just takes an extra step. Usually I find the part number for the part in the database for the region where the rig was originally imported. Once that retrieves the part you can scroll down the list for the various years and models and find the U.S. part number. I feel your pain. I spent almost a year having parts guys tell me the number was bad and the part didn´t exist until I figured this out. Once I laid all of this out, with the diagrams, to my local dealership parts guy he was on board. As soon as my rig gets here I´ll let you know. I´m in Beltsville, about 20 minutes from Annapolis.

I also have a set of 2H (I think 1mm oversize, but will check) pistons that I will not be using available. I will check if they are the alfin type with the cast-in top ring groove. They do appear a different colour around the ring groove so there is something different about them - not simply a machined in groove.

Going cheap since I wont be using them. If interested, PM me your email and I will send you a few photos or I can post them here, whichever you prefer.

Also SMS Diesel in Australia are inexpensive and have every part you could hope for in stock and happily post regularly to the USA.
There is a member here rebuilding a 12HT with parts from them.

How many miles has it done, knowing how badly the top rings wear on these, I would be suprised if the wear at the turn around point wouldnt neccesitate at least a first size overbore. Having said that, I did do a cheap and cheerful 12HT build where I honed all the marks out (was over max spec on piston to bore clearance), fit new std alfin pistons and filed back oversize rings (another real no no). Actually, this engine is terrific much to my suprise. Not bad for a 1 day and $600 excercise.

Supposedly the engine should only have around 170,000 KM on it. Seems low for worn ring lands. PM inbound.
