I am going to be picking up a 1980 hj45 diesel rt hand drive- do not know too much about these rigs- wondering what i should look for when i inspect the truck- i will be driving home about 1200 miles so i want to be prepared- any tool box suggestions to bring etc- also are there any good treads out there for diesels - it says the engine had been rebuilt- the rig looks clean but only see photos- thanks in advance-

havin trouble getting photos on this site- but it looks clean, i think it was a repaint- floors look good- a couple of little spots on the frnt wheel well- not sure the exact date on the rig- there is a photo of all the original books and manual- the engine manual show an H on it- so i am guessing it is 7/80?

yes- this is going to be my next money pit- got any advice of things that i should look at when i go to inspect the truck- i am working on getting some more info on the truck- engine- exact date etc. Of course should have asked more before hand- but any input would be appreciated- i bringing it up north and have hopes of possibly making it bio- i am still learning about this stuff-

I was surprised when I saw the picture of the right side front fender well. Looks like there is a steering box leak for one thing, but the other is the spring eye mounting pin, which is the earlier 2-bolt type. My chassis, which is an '82, has the later type, with a single bolt, which is common to the 60 series as well. I would have thought that '79 and later chassis would be of the same design. Could you post up a picture of your chassis number, as that would shed some light onto the date of manufacture for the chassis. I only ask, because my cab and chassis were not originally paired, and I'm beginning to wonder how many of these trucks have had similar switcheroos done, for various reasons.

I first pic is the picture from the Ebay listing, the second is the picture of my chassis, same location, and the original front spring mount on my truck (now replaced by a shiny greasable unit from sprungart).

Thanks for the replys- here is the info i have been
givin by the current owner- He says it is july 1980
The vin#
is HJ45050264, 6cyl diesel - now i am not sure if it is the same vin
engine as well but i am working on getting all that info-
The leaking steering box, what can be done about that? i have a long ride
ahead- what are the tell tail signs i need to know about to check
for problems? I want to be ready for this inspection- i don't need a lemon- as for the possibly body/matching/mismatching what are do you think after seeing the vin?

thanks

matt
