So how many miles can you get out of a full tank of gas?

Lucky, unless you have a diesel, I find that HARD to believe, that means you're getting a combined 20 mpg!

Lately I've been getting about 120 miles per tank because all my trips are short, in town, with a LONG warm up period.

I get between 400km-500km per tank (70L) with my 12H-T and 38s

before the modifications I was up around 700km -800km

I believe that's around 16mpg and 24mpg gallon respectively....

<snip> Anyone out there have miles/tank numbers on a 62?

My 62 is averaging 17 mpg on thbe hiway at 70-75 mph so 350 miles on a tank still leaves a few gallons for safety sake. About 275 miles around town leaves me looking for the cheapest gas prices. The truck rides on 33x10.50 ATs most of the time and is geared at 4.88. Put the 34x10.50 Swamper LTBs on and these figures change appreciably!

Gas is down to around 1.60/gal here... nice break from the 1.97 I've been paying for regular.

$1.97??? Only on the card lock or Costco is the price below $2
Can't remember the last time regular was below $2.
Welcome to the Peoples Republic of California.

270 all around driving but my tank is only 23 gallons

Russ,
I live near Santa Cruz and the gas is $1.95 at Shell. I can't believe that the gas price varies so much when it is all comming from the same place!!!

I remember that with 33s and 4.88s I would get 280 miles a tank, but not actual miles. (is everybody taking in to account that the stock cruiser odometer counts fast and that a lifted FJ-6X with gears may count slower or faster according to gearing and tire size?) I don;t buy any better than 14 MPG in an FJ-62, except for Overhanger's 3FE which is modified like mine.

Overhanger,
I was also detonating a little and I decided to put in the fuel rail out of the FJ-80 3FE I got and install it in my 3FE. Well no more pinging, I guess the FPR was bad. It was the original FPR, and it lasted 300,000 miles. Not too bad. Do you still have an OEM radiator in yours?

Hi Andrew,
Some think that 4.56s and 33s are the combination that most closely follow stock gearing and tires, but I've found the 33s and 4.88s are just about dead on in odo and speedo readings in my truck. If I could find 93 octane my truck would be happier as it still pings under certain partial throttle situations even after extensive efforts to eliminate detonation. Yeah, stock radiator. OEM radiator and fan clutch do a good job of keeping water temps in line - stock 192 degree thermostat in winter and 180 degree in summer.

Steve,

I am glad to hear you still have the OEM radiator cooling your motor well. I had rad. problems and I finally switched to my roomate's rad and the problems are gone so its time for me, and I was wondering if OEM would be sufficient. I was thinking aluminum, but I don't like having to isolate it from the body and frame electrically. I have recently seen one that wasn;t grounded correctly fail, they replaced it with OEM so..... I alwayd thought that the speedo was off with the 4.88s and 33s. maybe I was really going that fast? I remember one time I borrowed my buddy's GPS and it verified that my speedo was fast, but that was a little while ago so I don;t remember exactly what the situation was. I have been able to put some miles on the 3FE and I like the effect of the compression. the car is completely stock with stock sized tires, so it feels faster than normal. I have only put like 800 miles, and all of them before I was worried about temps so I didin;t push the motor. I can;t wait to see what the H55F feels like.

I am calculating an average based on 31X10.50's and the H55F. I will post when I finish tha tank. So far it looks good. Going for a much bigger tank.

WTF! Is there something wrong with mine or is it just my driving? I've been getting only about 180 to the the tank almost 200 tops but not quite.

i "filled" up today. i had about a 16th of a tank on the gague, filled 17 gallons and had 215 miles on the odometer. no, you arent crazy. these trucks suck gas. i average 10 - 13mpg. 33" tires and 4.88s

David,
I live in Campbell, about 20 minutes from Santa Cruz.

I get 16.9 mpg highway driving in my 83 FJ60 with H55f, and keep the rpms around 2500. If I drive faster, like I did when I went to Amarillo a couple of weeks ago from Dallas, my mpg drops significantly. I actually ran out of gas on the Amarillo trip. I was in a hurry, and driving about 75mph, and just didn't want to stop for gas until I got to Amarillo. It's about a 350 mile trip from Dallas. My fuel gauge was dropping fast, and I actually tried to stop in a small town about 25 miles out, but the town had only one gas station, and the pumps were out of order!!! So, I just kept on driving. It started sputtering and died, when I was only about 8 miles away from I-40, where there's at least 50 gas stations! I called my employee who lives in Amarillo, and he came out and we put three gallons of this season's lawn mower gas (he was going to throw it out, as he heard it wasn't any good), and that got me into town for a fillup. I felt kind of stupid. Almost like that Seinfield episode where Kramer was taking a new car for a test drive, and he wanted to see how far below "E" the gauge would go.

My (well used to be mine) 62 got about 130 miles to a tank. but i had stock 4.11 gears, 35" mudders, an @ss load of tools and gear, soa= massive air resistance, and an engine in some what need of rebuilding yet still runnin strong. plus i never drove under fifty in the city unless starting or brakin hard, and usually going 70 - 80 on the interstate ( but not going uphill). so four to five mpgs. broke the bank just to keep gas in her. The only thing possitive about selling her was saving money on gas.
