Took it for a 60 milke ride each way from bmore into pa this weekend. Temp got right befor the whiteline under hot there was maybe 1/8th inch gap between needle and the white mark

and what the hell does the normal , power buttons do ? as u see my dash has power lit up., Buttons wont push for me to see if theres a difrence. Does it change somthing in trans. or timing on the motor? will i be eleminating the buttons when i swap from my auto to the 5 speed?

anyone no how high my guage can get befor its actualy geting to hot?

That's really pushing it and is probably running hot. They usually are at about halfway normally which is around 180° I think. It is easy to warp the head or even the timing cover since the are both aluminum on an iron block.

x2, where your gauge is in the picture is about right. It will spike for a minute while warming up, but it shouldn't stay there. The button tells the tranny to downshift sooner and rev out a gear more on power setting.

That is way too high...if the guage is correct. The guage has a history of being incorrect, however, mine has always read correct. I would open the hood when it get's that hot and you will be able to tell right away if things are too hot under hood. If it's questionable, get a mechancial guage and that will tell you for sure.

If it is running hot, then it's time to go through the entire system...water pump, thermostat, hoses, fan clutch, radiator, new coolant etc.

I went through my entire system this summer and replaced everything listed above and it never gets hotter than 1/3 of the way up on the guage.

heater wasnt working as good as i think it should have been either. And it was the first real highway drive ive done with it but it was uphills mostly going. DO you think that my auto trans haveing issues could have caused it to get hot pretty shore the watterpuimp was put in when the motor got put in. it sat for like 6 years after the motor got installed., then i bought it. and here i am. Already added aftermarket oil pressure guage. guess its time for a temp guage to. Guess im gonna have to hit up Sam about a 2 stage thermostat.

How old is the radiator? I've seen this before, the problem was that the original radiator was shot, it was missing a bunch of the cooling fins that run between the tubes, also check the belts, are they tight enough, a slipping belt will prevent the water pump from working correctly. Has the cooling system been drained lately, you mentioned that the heat has not been working too well, that to me sounds like an air pocket. Once cool, remove the radiator cap, start the engine and let it run, let it get hot and look for air bubbles escaping. The MOST simple things are what we often overlook, so with that being said have you checked the coolant level lately?

them to pics were tonight. Its only geting warm on the highway. but i can drive threw the country up the susquehana river and it never go past half way on the twistys. i can drive it around the city and dont get hot put it in highway try to do 65 or 70 it gets warm. this is how high it got the other day on me when i drove it to pa. It sat for 6 years . after having a junkyard motor we got from a friends dad. put in it. I bught it. Ive done the fuel injectors tuneup . ujoints exc. Im pretty shore when we put the motor in it we did the watterpump and timing chain. me personaly i havent drained the radiator since i got it couple months ago. antifreze is nice and green. no leaks. And tonight the heat was rocking off in it. had to open the windows. colant is toped off

Kind of strange, a bad radiator would show its self at low speed in and out of traffic not at highway speeds when there is plenty of ram air going across the fins. I would suspect a thermostat, go to a Toyota dealership and get a replacement and perhaps a new temp sensor, neither are expensive or hard to replace. Did you happen to notice if the temp gets high with the heat on?

the temp u see above is with the heat on full blast. on fresh air intake instead of recirc so it would help cool it down. Im thinking the auto trans taking a shyt is the problem. Last night los 4rth gear., and its skiping from 1st to third with no second unless i put it in second now.

Well that is part of your problem, on just about every other engine turning on the heat during overheat will help cool the engine down, however on a Toyota 22RE it will cause it to run even hotter. The reason is because of how the coolant circulates back into the engine from the heater core, the cooler liquid from the heater core will cause the thermostat to close. There was a redesign of the thermostat that allows it to open at two different temperatures. Replace the thermostat, check for blockages on the radiator. Are you running big tires or pulling heavy loads? Other things to check if the thermostat does not fix the problem.....poorly tuned engine, blocked catalytic converter, trapped air in the coolant system, wrong water pump or failed water pump. On the water pump, I've heard of things like a sheared pump impeller, slipping belt, or a pump that fits but is designed to turn the other direction.

Good luck

Oh and stick with OEM Toyota parts for things like thermostats, brake and clutch hydraulic parts as well as ALL electrical components too. My thoughts are if those parts lasted for 200k the first time then chances they will last for another 200k.

its got 32 11.50 bfg on it . next weekend im hopeing the 5speed is installed. gonna do the thermostat and see what happens cant drive it till i swap trans now

Okay, big tires and a transmission that already puts a load on the small 2.4l engine plus the hills of PA at 60+ mph and perhaps a worn out thermostat sounds like you my be pushing that engine a bit much. Keep in mind when the 4Runner first came out they were about fuel Econ and affordability, further they were geared to get the best performance at 55mph which was the National speed limit at the time. I really think the thermostat will help, also if you plan on running big tires consider a regear of the axels. I know the 5spd axels are 410 or 411's not sure if the autos had a lower ratio or not, it would be worth it to find out, if they are lower then no need to regear. Good luck with he 5speed swap.

i got the 4.33 gearing with the auto. the 5 speed should put me closer to the final gear ratio of a normal 5 speed truck. im considering picking up a set of factory 4.88 cariers. but i also plan to do a 4.3 vortec v6 swap in the spring. i just need it driveable wheelable for winter with the 22re,. so i can sell my suburban and pick me up a pickup. or another old caprice cop car from the 90s ;)

sitting int he back of my surburban is a complete 5 speed setup pedals nuts bolts slave master ever was on the truck needed to use the 5 speed we got. bought new clutch fly wheel. just gota get it in

woooooooooooooooooooooot sunday i go put my 5 speed in yayayayayayay
