Just got back from one of the best snow runs I think I've ever been on. It's been snowing in Woodland Park all day, so I figured it would be the perfect time to get out and do some snow wheeling. It ended up being Justin, Mike and I and we decided to head up 347--Missouri Gulch--I knew there would be some deep virgin snow out that way. Once we were there, I thought it might be too much for the 31-32 inch tire range Justin and I were in. Mike was having no trouble with his new 37x 13.50 Pit Bull Rockers. I hit one snow hill maybe 10 times before making it, and that was after installing the chains on the rear tires. I'm not sure my frame is "exactly" straight anymore either. Justin seemed to be making it OK, I did have to put the strap on him at the very top of Missouri gulch just before we headed down back to rainbow falls.
It was decided to head up 351, then out to Rampart and take that route home, we figured there would be at least one vehicle stuck up there...there always seems to be. We were in for a surprise when we got half way up 351 though--the snow there was over my knees, about 24 inches deep. Mike was making amazing progress with his new fuel injected Mustang engine, but in the end, it was just too much snow. We pulled the winch cable in hopes to get over one more hill and keep going, but the labor was not worth the gain. Beaten, we headed back. I honestly believe that was the deepest snow I have ever witnessed in Rainbow falls.
We got back the the parking area, I removed my chains, and we reflected back on the deep snow. It was crazy how just standing outside for 10 minutes, your pant legs would freeze up to your back side. With my Carhartt coveralls, I almost couldn't bend my knees. We packed up and headed back, about half way home, the Bronco gave up and ran out of gas. Let me tell you, when an early bronco says it's low on gas--you better believe it. I ended up strapping to Mike and pulling him the rest of the way home, also burning on fumes. Snow wheeling really does a number on your gas mileage.
Sorry about the bad cell phone pics, it was that or nothing, My digital camera is shot.
Good times
