Semi hijack - Eric, what's the 101 thru Santa Barbara looking like since lots of people are probably using it as an alternate route to Norcal? Caltrans site does not say anything about congestion.

wow, looks like there is a lot of snow indeed.
I'm gonna go and check it out. Sadly, if by myself, can't do too much.
I'll try to monitor 146.46. Don't have a good CB, sorry but may try a handheld on 26 occasionally.
There is/was open wifi at the Flying J. I may try to check for messages on MUD when I fill up.
Should be great fun.
well, I'm up at the Flying J (intersection 5 and Frazier park road).
Here is the situation:
the southern part of HV has no snow. I don't recall if there is a gate at the southern entrance and didn't check. I went up to the northern entrance and that one was closed at 10:50am or so. There is snow on the northern side, about 95% coverage from what I can see. don't know how deep and whether the trails are covered or not. Moot point if one can't get in. Damn, I tried to call several times, nobody answered.
So I think I'm going to go on towards 33 and BC109/Dry Canyon, maybe go see PMC. there is a lot of snow on the slopes around here already. will be fun.
Maybe skipping work for the Cleghorn run would have been a better deal. Right after work this morning took a nap and then took the kids up 5 North to check out the snow. Apparently, the surrounding valleys had the same idea. Took me by surprise when I approached the exit - a freaking line to get off.
And then - well, they closed off Frazier Mtn Park road going to Frazier Park and Mt Pinos - allowing only local resident to get through. What the heck? SVRA too!
So all the tourist ended up playing on the side of the hightway and side roads. Seemed everybody was desperate to play on the white stuff. Not to make waste of the time and the kids screaming to get off... I thought its still freaking snow! Not Mt Pinos snow but what the heck.
yup, there were big crowds up there. When I got up past Frazier Park towards PMC, around 12 or so, there was a big line of cars where the Mt Pinos turn off is where the CHP was sending everybody back. Well, he had one look at the cruiser and I was through ) There were folks parked on the side of the road everywhere with the sleds out. Fun time for the kids.
I tried to turn onto Cherry Creek Rd, but there were 5 cars (Tahoes and the like) stuck a little further up. Bling city.... Hightailed it out of there before I had to winch them all out... Saw quite a few more stuck cars up there.
Had the pleasure to say Hi to Hat in PMC and then off to 33, where I found out that the road to Ojai was still closed and the rangers told me that Lockwood valley rd was closed too now.... With a big storm brewing on top of the mountains. So headed back out through Cuyama. Basically saw only one dirt road with snow that was not closed or blocked and I as wadvised not to try that one alone. So much for the big snow wheeling... But the snowy hills were beautiful and sky sunny and blue.
I'm a bit annoyed at the HV SVRA folks who closed the place down, didn't answer the phone, and didn't put a message up about the area being closed down until midday saturday...
as far as CHP closing down roads because too many people want to go up the mountain to play in the snow is also questionable as a matter of principle. If it's for safety it's one thing, but if it's for convenience of the residents it's another. These after all are public roads paid with public money...
Shane, I wouldve been crazy enough to go to Cleghorn if I was able to get out of my shift on time. I would hate for everybody to wait on someone that cant say exactly what time hes getting out of work.
Glad you guys had a blast playing in the snow with your rigs!
i believe im heading up to mt pinos/frazier park on monday... not for wheeling but just for snow recreation and the views with some friends. i wonder if the roads will be closed to non residents still. though, i can imagine that they were only that strict over the weekend for the out of towner/visitor rush.

Axed - sometimes you just find out when you get there. ;p
If they have a smile when they tell you to turn back - theyre just being strict.
If they have anger in their voice - well...
