I recently acquired an 82 4x4 pick-up/crawler. It is a beater that is green tagged but will not be licensed
for the raod (California) again. It run like crap so I started trying to sort out vacuum leaks etc. and have not gotten very far. I noticed in th Haynes repair manual that the 82 Canada version has very little smog equipment. Could I just strip the California version down to the Canada version? It sure would make thing cleaner. Is The carb the same? What about timing etc. Any suggestion would be great! I have attached the diagrams I was referencing.

I'd look into an aftermarket carb and/or manifold if you don't need to smog it. Simplify things. I hate 80's cars for smog. So much crap to deal with.

I didn't reply earlier because I didn't want to admit what I had done, but I did exactly what you are thinking about to an '83 22r, only I deleted the HAI system as well. It worked entirely too well, and then I even got it inspected and drove it on the street. I just copied the vacuum lines from the diagram onto my engine, and removed unused components, while putting rubber vacuum caps on all of the unused nipples. I felt dirty every time I opened my hood.

Thanks for the input. I did not want to rip out things only to discover that it would not run.
I was thinking of going to an aftermarket Holley set up too.
