Haven't been by in awhile. My dad (Mt. DEW) lives at Skyline so I'll give him a call and see if he can drive by the campsite and see what it looks like and report back.

#1 is definitely has the easiest access.

I was looking at Google earth last night (satellite date 2003) and it looks like there a many houses around the area of that campsite. I don't know the neighborhood, so its hard to tell the condition of the area. My only concern would be leaving our campsite unattended during the day.

I see there is also a campground off 146 (just east of the target range) that is in a little less populated area. It is also about a 1 mile or so from the meeting point.

Please keep me posted. I am passing this information along on the DixieLand forum too.

Thanks,
Howard

Do the campsites have water & poopers?

No they are primative campsites. If you are inquiring about facilities for your wife :princess:, maybe Roger will let her use his camper.

Since I will be leaving my truck and camper at the camp site while we are wheeling, I am willing to some manuvering to get to a safe place.

Forgot to post up that I'm in for this one. I *might* be arriving a little late as I might be going to a concert friday night...not sure yet. But, I'll be there!

I'm hauling Todd's cruiser, so if he is to late someone else can wheel it.

I might need to wheel it... my truck is only running on four cylinders right now. Started running rough on the way home from the New Year's deal. I thought it was spark related, but is starting to look mechanical.

By the way, I'd be willing to camp. It's still up in the air if I'm going but if I do...

The campground off 146 is also a good option. There really isn't a lot of houses around any of them. I can't say with complete confidence that the camps will be safe unattended but there really shouldn't be anyone on the WMA during Feb because it's in between deer and turkey season as far as hunting goes.

BTW, I think a couple of guys off the blue forums might be interested in camping with you guys if that's ok.

Anyone is welcome to camp, as long as they bring enough beer!

Once the campgound is finallized you can post it on the FJC forum. Since all I have to go by is satellite images from Google earth, it is hard to make a decision.

Can you or your dad do some recon for us and check out the campsite north of Hytop (off 79) and the campsite off 146 (just east of the target range)?

Thanks!
Howard

I'll be up at my dad's shop on Saturday putting in some new u-joints for my front driveshaft. I'll try to go over and check it out.

UPDATE - February 5, 2009

Hello Everyone!

Just a little update.

Details on camping are still being worked out and I will post more information once it becomes finalized.

In order to get an idea of how many of us are planning to participate in the Skyline Ride, I have posted a poll in the forum. If you are planning to attend or thinking about attending the SMC Skyline Ride, please complete the following survey:

SMC 3rd Annual Skyline Ride Member Survey

Thank you!

UPDATE - February 9, 2009

Hello Everyone!

Camping information is now finalized!

If you have not already done so, please complete the Skyline Ride Survey so we can get a idea of who all is coming.

Mt. Dew and BamaBleach have graciously offerred to let us camp on their property located right off HWY 79 on County Road 143. The camp site is located approx. 4 miles South of the ride meeting point at HWY 79/CR 146.

You can get directions using MapQuest or MSN maps, however I DID NOT have luck using Google maps.

Use the following address for directions:

765 County Road 143
Scottsboro, AL 35768

There should be plenty of room for everyone. We will be camping on the site of an old chicken house that was removed in the 70s, so the ground is firmly packed and level. However, if you are bringing a tow rig, camper, or combination of both place let me or Roger know.

We will have access to a bathroom in Mt. Dew's shop, but no showers. The bathroom uses a primative septic system, so we'll have to limit its use.

We will be allowed to build a camp fire, but firewood may not be available. If everyone camping brings a little bit of firewood we should be safe.

Also, DixieLand Cruisers will be providing dinner Saturday after the ride for those of you that are camping.

Stay tuned to this thread. I will be posting information as it becomes available.

On directions to the camp site:

Google maps can't even find my parents house when you put in the address and I just checked map quest and it tells you to turn west on County Road 143 when should be going east. So I did a screen capture of the google satellite image and made my own map for you guys.

Hope this helps:
