have a 1983 c30 1 ton chevy dump. 350/ muncie sm465 w/trans PTO. It suffers from a problem I am told that it gets stuck in two gears. I guess that a traveler gear falls off the fork and gets stuck in two ranges? The first time it happened (yesterday) Under advice of a friend, as it was on a hill, he said that the two gears were betting against one another, the pressure from the weight of the vehicle was making sure that it stayed bound. I bounced it a couple of times, and got the shifter into the gate-it was tight in the 1-2 side, but I eventually jiggled it to the 3-4 side. Voila! I drove it about 40 miles today, and it screwed up twice on me. It will be shifting fine and then I will go from say 1st to second and I will feel it go to the gate, but all of a sudden, 2nd is not there to go to. I will try to go back to 1st, but it is locked out of that too. If I go across to 3/4, It seems to click over and not want to go back to 1/2, but I usually can jiggle it to 3rd, cook the clutch a little bit and im rollin. At that point, the trans is somewhat "resetted" and I can go back down to 1/2. I took the top cover off, and I see that there is nothing that appears out of place, but the top cover is behaving as if it is the problem. Is it the problem, or does it click into some sort of "stuck sort of in reverse" thing casue I had to put it in sort of reverse to get to this point? In looking at the innards of this trans I coulnt ever seeing anything breaking in there.
